I believe its just forward of the windshield..air is pulled in and then run over or thru the cooling or heating elements...
You are correct! The windshield cowl cover has a screen area. That is where the air enters the cowl but the HVAC intake is on the passengers side almost directly below the passengers wiper arm stalk. Its about 6" more towards the passengers side.
The hood gasket that seperates the cowl from the engine compartment must be in-place and in good shape. Also look on the cowl fire wall area and make sure someone didnt cut the cowl/fire wall to do an oil pressure sender replacement short cut and not patch the hole back up!
