Default Zip Tie Mod

What exactly is the zip tie mod, and how hard is it?

Thanks

It involves removing the front portion of the air lid and zip tieing the filter onto the back portion. Very simple.

This means the whole filter is now exposed to allow more air through.

If you still have the factory paper filter, you are better off getting an aftermarket airflter. You are not going to see any difference in hp with more air going through a paper airfilter.

It should make a noticeable difference. Well worth the effort.

Take off the shroud covering your airfilter and then ask yourself that question again. Once you see the little area these things are getting air from you won't hesitate to remove the thing and do one of three things.
1. either modify the cover you have or buy a C5Z06 type.
2. Or get a totally new one with a different kind of filter.
3. do the Zip-tie mod

Make sure you do the hood seal, so water does not get sucked into the filter. It has happened.

I did the Z06 air box.

You could also do the swiss cheese mod.

I like the zip-tie approach.

Tests show that paper filters filter the best:

And you don't have to be careful of puddles.

Of course, I'm also of the opinion that a C5 is stupid fast even with the stock airbox.

I'm not a fan of the zip tie mod like mentioned above just bore four larger holes in the front cover which will allow more air than the engine will need anyway.
This way the cover will still hold your filter in place.

Default Swiss Cheese or 1/2 Cheese

I did the half swiss cheese - it is quite effective and is not visable from an open hood view without really straining to look for is - and of course it is FREE!!!!

This is I think a Z06 air box - half drilled

This is an older air box full drilled

When changing to the Blackwing vs. the stock airbox it was indeed a noticeable difference. It wasn't simply a placebo effect. How much power it added I have no idea as I certainly wasn't interested in dyno'ing the car with just a filter change. I'm sure that each manufacturers claims of xxrwhp are probably exaggerated, but at least in my case it made a tangible difference. I don't see why a zip tie'd filter wouldn't help some as well.

Well the difference is that you have a 2002 Z06 which came with a better breathing air box than the 97's. The 97 on up to about 2001 had the solid breather box. Air had to get in through the sides, which was hot air at that. SO in your case you wouldn't feel the effect that the rest of us have.

Definitely get the hood seal if you cut your box lid!
