Stupid question but does anyone know about the air pump found in the d/s front? What does it do, can I diconnet it? Will it throw codes if disconnected?
It will throw a code if disconnected. It's purpose is to inject oxygen into the exhaust right after start up to help burn any leftover fuel in the exhaust during this rich condition.

It also runs during a self diagnostic test of the air injection system. If anything in the air system is not working right, a code associated with the failed component will pop-up.
the purpose of the air pump is to add air during the first few minutes of runtime to your exhaust stream. this coupled with the extra unburned fuel from the warm up enrichment gets the converters up to temperature and operational much faster.
If you put on aftermarket exhaust-- does this get bypassed. What I am saying is can the air pump be eliminted without any problems?
Most aftermarket headers have the bungs for the AIR system, but it can be removed no problems. I removed mine and sold the stuff in the parts section to pay for other mods. Less weight and less clutter in the engine bay
After removal u will need to have the codes turned off in the pcm. This will allow u to pass the computer check. Most states don't (I know CA does) do a visual inspection for this equptment.
HPT has this feature, not sure what other tuning software does, but I think most do

I also verifies the operation of the front O2's. With the system in operation, the PCM looks for the extra air reading from the O2's.
I live in NY and if the check engine light is on it will fail. S0 whatyou guys are saying is that I can delete the air pump a code or check engine light comes on and has to be turned off through the pcm? How do you turn it off?
I removed it from my 82 Camaro when I was 16 and I plan to remove it from my 02 C5 now!
I can't wait to get it out of there. I am not sure of when to do it as I might go turbo or might go supercharger and I don't want to buy headers till then.

You have to get the computer reprogrammed to not report an error for the air pump.
