Before you chop up your muffler system, buy some 2" longer bolts the same size as the bolts that connect the muffler flange to the midpipe flange and add some 3/4" nuts between the two flanges (makes a gap between the two flanges) and you will have the same sound as muffler eliminators or straight pipes.
I did this on my 98 Coupe and found the sound fun but very crude! Its a gutteral sound and has a LOT of popping. More than when the mufflers are installed. The resonance is unreal!!! I imagine that it would be a little less with the pipes out the back but not much less! After a couple of months of open pipes, and drone, I connected the flanges back together and purchased a set of Ti mufflers. Much more refined.
I still don't know what everyone is talking about as far as drone. I took mine out on the highway tonight and was running 70 and could still carry on a conversation just fine. Almost still sounds stock. The only time you really hear it is when you really get down on it and then it rumbles.

Since I've been planning on going with a catback anyway, I guess there is nothing to lose if I mod my stock pipes and don't like it...good to hear that there's no drone, though. Also, it doesn't sound like I'll lose power from bypassing the mufflers, which is a good thing. After I'm done I'll report back.
Given your age and your goal I'd say you're on the right path. You will like it. There will be minimal drone as long as the exhaust is exiting out the back. Honestly it won't even be super loud.
Personally I have headers/high-flow cats and then cutouts before the rear axle. I apparently wasted my money on electric cutouts because I haven't closed them in years. I love it - sounds like a proper V8. It's really loud in the car though, since the exhaust exits under the rear "tub", it resonates in that cavity pretty well. I've had it like this for 4 years and still love it everytime I drive it. I AM "only" 27 though
