okay, after my 98 a/4 car is warmed up and sitting idleing,[at night] a motor/servo/pump/????? underneath the drivers side headlamp, below the frame horn, clicks or cycles. and will make the running lights dim for a split second..., any ideas as to what it is is,and why or what is making it short the electrical system........thanks
Its the A. I R. ( (Air Reaction Injection ) pump. It injects fresh air into the exhaust manifolds after the engine is warm to test the CATs. The PCM checks the putput of the O2 sensors during the run cycle and expects to see a change during the test.
The pump only runs for a couple of minutes during the test and for the most part its OFF.
i think i would also check the voltage on your battery to make sure it is up to snuff. sometimes a weak battery will not have enough juice to support the initial startup requirement of an accessory like the pump. should have more than 12 volts across the battery, engine off.
If your concerned on the amount of current draw it is using, install an amp meter in series with the AIR Pump and measure the draw. It cant be all that much or it would blow the fuse.
