Default Oil Change Question

I am getting my 3rd oil change done at 15,000 miles and want to know the proper way since I see many different post on how to do it. I take it to my local Good Year Dealer as they have done all my work on my cars for years. They roll it right onto a platform lift and it is level, as I watch and they remove plug and filter and wait 15 minutes to drain all the oil. My question is all the oil out or is there some still in and if how does it all come out. On my last oil change I did as above and added 6.5 quarts and seemed like a little more oil that showed up on the dip stick. In short is this the proper way to do or should any changes be made as Good Year has been great to me through the years and would do whatever I ask. Thanks for the help.

Hockey -

not 100% sure of this, but i think the proper way, (and the way i do it) is to raise the rear of the car higher than the front and let it drain for approximmately 20 minutes. this allows for the oil to flow toward the front of the sump - near the drain plug. doing this, my 2000 coupe takes 6.75 qts to fill (w/new filter). does anyone have the CORRECT procedure for oil changes on a c5? gm should have this in writing somewhere. :flag

HOCKEY,

As Joe said they need to lift the rear of the car a few inches in order to get complete drainage of the oil.

My 2001 coupe takes 7 qts. to bring the level to just under the top hole in the dip stick.

I always lift the rear while it drains for about 15 minutes.

Good luck.

Great!! I knew that this would re-surface...remember that in 2001 they re-designed the dipstick and dipstick tube (actually they moved it about 4-6 inches away from the firewall...don't believe me...line up your '01 against any '97-'00 and you will see the difference). Anyway, when I did my first oil change (and I lifted the rear to get every bit of oil out), I measured just a tad over 7.0 qts of oil (including the oil in the filter). I then refilled with 6.5 qts and you guessed it...my dipstick read a half quart low. However, a vast majority of '97 thru '00 owners have reported that their Vettes only require 6.5 qts to reach the MAX line on their dipsticks...so who knows? Personally, I think that they when they redesigned the dipstick in '01 that they screwed up and that by adding that extra half quart of oil it is actually an "overfill" of oil on your part. The extra half quart is probably not going to cause any problems...but it is still an overfill (if you go by the 6.5 qts as posted in your manual).
It is also very possible that by lifting the rear up (which GM dealerships do not do) you will get you an extra half quart of oil out of her. And that alone could account for the extra half qt required. However, it still doesn't make sense that 90% of the posters said that their '01 (and now '02 models) take 7.0 qts and that 90% of '97 thru '00 take only 6.5 qts. Go figure!
Dave Hill and his cohorts keep insisting that the proper refill is 6.5 qts. GM needs to officially come out and tell us why we are putting in 7.0 qts of Mobil One to reach the MAX line on our dipsticks!!! :yesnod:

How do I get the rear lifted. Might sound like a dumb question.

It's easy if you do it at home, but the shop may have some trouble getting the back end of the car up higher than the front. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Mark-- I just finished an oil change on my 2002 coupe and put in 6.5 quarts and it did not reach the shaded area yet, it appears to be just below it. Yes I did change the filter as well. It looks as though it will take seven quarts to fill it to the top hole on the dipstick. I decided to wait till morning to check it again before I do to make sure that all the oil is drained back.
