went to start my 2003, made a sound like it was going to turn over, then died. nothing worked, no radio, nothing. hooked a charger to it, all it would do was click.
so i took the battery form my 78 and put it in, started right up.
now the check engine light is on and was wondering if anyone had any ideas why. it was never on today while i was driving it, before it failed to start.
battery was only 10 volts. going to replace the delco with an optima this time.
Find out what the code is and post it here. Low-voltage codes because of a weak battery are probably not anything to be concerned with, but a check engine light? Let us know what you find.
Regarding Optimas - lots of premature failures reported here in this forum, so I am a bit concerned. Sears does have a new Platinum, but initial reports are that they are very heavy compared to the AC Delco batteries.
1518 is whats causing the light, which is the serial bus connecting the PCM and TAC modules.
Since your battery was dead and you tried to start the car I'd be willing to bet thats why you have the fault, erase all of them and see if anything comes back.
cleared the codes, no check engine light. hopefully it will be ok. don't think the battery's fully charged yet. shows 13.5-13.8 and drops a little when i brake and signal. have my battery tender on for the night. hopefully be fully charged in the morning.

any comments welcome.

Don't know if this would cause the check engine light to go on but then again it might....I can only speak for my '04 but the minimum CCA for the battery has to be 590 if its less you can run into problems, don't know what kind of cca's the battery from your '78 had. When my orig delco took a dump I put the Red top in without a hitch.
