This weekend is oil change time so i am going to change the differential too.
I went to the local Chevy dealer at lunch, intending to buy the non-synthetic gear oil and the additive for positraction for my Y2K Coupe.
The parts guy, who is pretty good, showed me a bulletin from GM that reccommended the GM Synthetic and the additive. I don't know whether this is just for the 2000 but he asked me twice what year my car was. The sheet he showed me looked like an emailed bulletin.
I am sticking with Gm recs because of my 5 year 100k warranty.
Here are the part numbers:
Gear Oil 12378261
Additive 1052358
I always use synthetic, choosing Mobil 1 gear oil for the diff (with the GM additive) and the Mobil 1 ATF for the trans. Not that I think Mobil 1 is better than the other synthetics, but it is readily available at Autozone.
Your 2000 Coupe, as well as all C5's since 1997, came from the factory with synthetic gear lube in it. I also use MOBIL 1 SAE75W-90 Gear Lube with the GM posi additive. You will give you car the best lubrication with synthitic lubricants. :yesnod:
My mechanic Jon Erwin at Maroone Chevrolet showed me a bulletin from GM that solved a problem for me. The problem was a grinding noise at low speeds in a turn eminenting from the rear end. I was told it was the clutches that are used in the non-slip differential making the noise. GM recommened using standard 80/90# gear oil with GM's additive. Noise stopped! I'm sorry I don't know the bulletin number or the reason why but it worked. My car is a 99 with 16,000 miles and has made said noise as long as I can remember. :flag
From 97-98 Chevrolet did not put synthetic gear lube in the rear end. They used the regular gear lube with the limited slip additive. In 99, they began using synthetic gear lube and that is what is causing the noise in the rear end. Changing the fluid does correct the problem :
