Took the console apart today to repair the A4 shifter that I damaged the other day when the car would not shift out of Park. I pulled a little bit too hard on the shifter and bent the locking pin. No big deal, pulled things apart and straightened the pin. While I was at it, I figured that I would take the advice of others here and disconnect the cable that interlocks with the ignition key, keeping you from taking the key from the ignition if the shifter was not all the way in Park.
Put everything back together and realized that there was force in the wrong direction when shifting. Opened things up again and noticed that the shifter cable had 3-4 strands frayed and wrapped around the cable so that it would not go back into the sheath.
Lucky me. Now I get to buy another shifter cable tomorrow. At least I am storing an S2000 for a friend of mine. I know that car will be reliable to run for parts.
Rick, think of your Corvette as a woman or a computer. They will do whatever they want, whenever they want for no appearant reason. They also do it because this is the way they express their love for you, and they want to see how much you love them! Remember Murphy's addage to Murphy's own law:
"If it has wheels or a skirt, you are going to have trouble with it!"

Amazing how close you are to the root of the problem.
I got rid of the skirt in February. When I was unable to sell HER car, I traded it for this Corvette. I think her spirit has followed as I have done nothing but work on this car.
In addition to the shifter cable, I will be ordering brass headlight gears this week and installing the new front spring (delivering today) to replace the one that is cracked on my car.
Beginning to think that I should have just lived with the Honda S2000.
Oh, did I mention that my 2004.5 Dodge Ram is in the shop having the cab floor replaced because my transfer case exploded at 71600 miles (7/70 powertrain warranty) and the front driveshaft whipped around and caught the wiring harness, fuel and brake lines?
I disconnected the PARK SOLENOID which keeps the car in park until you hit the brake pedal and left the key switch interlock so you can't remove the key except in park. My solenoid LOCKED UP and after beating the thing for a half hour it finally came out of park. Simply UNPLUG it and it will NEVER BOTHER YOU OR STRAND YOU AGAIN. Still want to take the key out in park. BIGHANK

I am beginning to think I just need to walk.

Is dodge covering the problem under warrenty??? If NOT, call Dodge customer assistance and ask for coverage (politely ) They should assign you a case number and that will help you get some coverage! please let us know how you make out. You need something to run parts for the C5!

Dodge covered the transfer case. Basically their response was: we'll cover the t-case but the rest of the damage is your problem. Be happy that we are doing that much and don't complain or we'll change our minds and not cover anything.
My insurance company is paying for everything else as damage caused due to mechanical failure (such as if I blew a tire on the freeway.)
Let's not get into the Dodge. That has not been a good experience. I love the truck but now am afraid to trust it for anything.

That is what I was in the process of doing when I discovered the broken strands on the shifter cable. I was reassembling everything when the cable would not move smoothly and there was too much tension when the shifter was in park. Sure enough, the cable is bad. As a side note, it looks like the solenoid is fine. I'm not going to chance it and remove all that crap while I am there.

I didn't CHANGE IT just UNPLUGGED IT. There is a 2 pin plug on a short wire lead coming out of the solenoid. MY SOLENOID will NEVER keep me locked in park again. BIGHANK
