Default Which spark plug wires?

My car has headers. I recently put on some MSD wires because a mechanic told me that the noise I was hearing was due to the wires I had. Sure enough, changed the wires and noise stopped. The MSD wires came recommended and the parts store agreed. However, after one day the heat from the header burnt one of the wires. Which wires will work with headers?

Thank you.

I run the stock wires with heat shields and have no issues with heads / cam and headers.

I would recommend going back to the stock wires, or you may be able to put a heat shield on the MSD's.

Go with stock Z06 wires and heat shields. They are your best bet. I just replaced a set of highly recommended after market wires with the Z06 wires, so far so good.

Do the heat socks touch the headers with the MSD's? The wire is pretty close.

Does anybody know the part code for stock Z06 wires?

Thanks for the help.

You can save some money by picking up a set of Autolites for $35 from Advance Auto & just use the stock heat shields. They look just like stock and car runs great !!

Take a look at the GM Performance wire set - Part number 12495519 - I have them on my Z06 and they work great.

I'm running Melrose Plug wires and cool sox - actually, my "cool sox" are NOT the "Cool Sox" brand - I got them from Thunder Racing and they withstand 1200* heat - can't remember the brand name though - many of my "socks" touch, but no heat problems.

Ah, just as I posted, I remembered - I've got Taylor "Fire Sleeves" - I like 'em!

Magnecore KV85 Header wire set. They have angled ends. You should also use kool socks over them if the headers are close.

The GM Red Performance wires are HALF the price of the black ones, can use the heat/RF shields and look great too. Go to Gene. He has them for just over $50. BIGHANK

Thanks for all the help. I am going to either keep my MSD's or get the Z06 wires. Either way I will use the socks.

There are no "Z06" wires ... the Z06 comes with the same plug wires as the LS1 ... Maybe you're thinking of the GM Performance wires I referenced in post #8 above ??

I spoke to a mechanic who worked for the shop who originally put on my headers. He said that the shop uses Taylors. I have ordered a set and should have them by Monday. Thanks for all the help.

From what I'v read the Z06 uses the RED Performance wires which are the same as the black ones only half the cost and nicer looking. BIGHANK

Nothing like asking for our advice and then ignoring it ....

bighank,

My Z06 came from the factory with the "grey" stock wires, but it is a 2001, so GM may have switched to the Performance Plug wires in a later Model Year for the Z06. Regardless, the Performance wires are, to my mind, the best buy based on both price and performance ... sounds like you've made this discovery too ...
