Default AGM Battery

I have seen this term mentioned several times here, and having just purchased an 02 convertible am curious as to what this means. Does anyone have a good technical explanation or know where I can get more information on "AGM" batteries?

Very impressive improvements over lead-acid batteries (and even spiral-wound batteries)

I haven't read about any failures with the Optima.......yet!

You have to ask yourself though - Who sells more batteries? Even if we look at just Optimas vs AGMs, I think you'll find that the volume of AGMs far exceed that of the Optimas. That being said, let's consider the failure rate of new batteries, say within the first six months. Odds are that if you compare the failure "rate" of both, you'll find that they are very similar.

In other words, there will always be a "bad" Dell, Canon, Toyota, Honda, etc, but given the sheer volume of products these companies sell, I'd say chances are pretty darn good that you will have few if any problems.

Thanks for all the information and the links. Guess I have a lot to learn about the C5. And I used to feel comfortable with my knowledge level on my 90.

I am assuming this since you have a '02 correct? Anyone know how to Identify the new Delco AGM battery? Is the part number different? Just had my battery in my '99 replaced under warranty and am now wondering if I got lucky and it was replaced with an AGM??

I don't want to unfairly characterize the Delco AGM, but my experience with the one in my 2001 coupe was not good. The battery went completely dead when the car was three months old. It could not be jumped, and the car had to be flatbedded to the dealer. They load tested the battery and found it to have a bad cell. The dealership indicated they had not experienced many problems with the AGM, so perhaps I just had a bad battery. However, the flimsy construction of the AGM, plus the fact that it is made in Mexico, does not exactly inspire confidence. I much prefer the Optima.

Being heavily involved in manufacturing for many years, I can, without a doubt, tell you that judging the quality of a product by its country of origin is just not fair. I have noticed that for quite a few years, almost every tool sold in any store is made in China. Should we tell ourselves and others that anything made in China is junk? In order for GM to give you a world-class sportscar for $50,000, many of the components in the car must be made where labor is inexpensive. Fortunately, the General, not the workers who assemble the parts, stipulates how high the "quality" of its components will be. Remember, at the same time Chrysler K-cars were being assembled in the good ol US, Honda Accords were being assembled here as well. Which car is more reliable?

In summation, any manufacturer can ensure that the products they design are of high quality, regardless of where they are assembled. Judging by the contruction details of the AGM platinum posted in the AcDelco web site, I think that these batteries will prove to be very reliable, made in Mexico and all.

This is an absurd statement:
"Even if we look at just Optimas vs AGMs, I think you'll find that the volume of AGMs far exceed that of the Optimas."

Since GM who s in bed with delco puts these in their vehicles when manufactured !

it isnt as though we go out and BUY these batteries!!!!

This fact was not presented to infer that more Delco batteries are sold because more "people" are buying them. I was trying to point out that if there are 100,000 batteries being used everyday and 1000 of them fail before the warranty has expired, then 1% have failed. Now let's say that there are 1000 Optimas out there and 10 of them fail. Not only are the percentages of failure the same, but you can be sure that you will most likely HEAR about the Delco failures long before you hear about any Optima failures, NOT because one is more reliable than the other. How many times have you heard of a neighbor's Peugot having problems? Never? Does this mean that Hondas are less reliable, simply because you've heard of some Honda failures?

Before you call some statement "absurd", ask for clarification; you might learn something!

Mike,

Is "AGM" displayed anywhere on your battery?

Dave68:

It sure is...just like your pictures but Not like those in ACDelco website. Leads me to believe that Delco might have made a different (read "cheaper") battery (#2277) for OEM use. Not wanting to take chances since I store the car for 6 month stints, I replaced it after 6 months and 1900 miles with an Interstate Orbital (a dupe AGM of the Optima).
