ok so im driving home from work on the highway, im cruising in 6th gear everything is peachy. i hit my brakes to compensate for traffic, and when i down shift to accelerate, my motor bogs down. WTF!? so then i put it back in 6th and barely use the throttle, i make it another mile or so, go to accel and she bogs and dies. I pull over, hit the ignition, and theres no annoyingly loud fuel pump noise anymore.... FARK! my gas gauge is reading about 67 miles till empty (about an 1/8 of a tank). well i got it towed home and tried it again, i hear a faint zzzzz sound and gurgling from the passenger side fuel tank, but no nice and loud fuel pump noise. I checked the fuse, its good. checked the relay by using the horn relay, and that wasnt the culprit either. there are no new codes, and the only old one is something in the BO-RFA and i think its a 1046 or something close to it. did my fuel pump just quit on me?~?!? because I JUST got my damn car back monday from a clutch job and i dont have another 300 dollars for a fuel pump please help with ideas NOW. yes, im getting spark. after she died on the highway she started once or twice but with a rough and low idle trying to stay lit and as soon as id hit the throttle it would die. HELP!!! i need to get to work tomorrow, and ill go insane if i have to go ANOTHER 2 weeks without my vette..
does the C5 fuel pump have a failsafe that turns off the fuel pump if theres no gas? cause normally id hear that annoyingly loud fuel pump cut on and I got nada.
Just an FYI for you and the forum:
It is hard on electric fuel pumps to run with a low tank. Every second that a pump sucks air reduces pump longevity. The effect is accumulative over time.
there is a decent amount of gas in my drivers side tank. i shook the car and could hear it sloshing around in a festive manner.. looks like I need a volt meter and to jack the car up to see if im getting power to the wires. if so, dead pump, if not... christ I dont wanna know.
I bet your fuel pump overheated due to the tank being low. If your wait a few hours it might start again. You should never go below a quarter of a tank.
OK, this crap happened to me before too. It turned out to be the passenger side pump. But also check your main pump and the fuel relay switch in the main fuse box. I also couldn't hear my fuel pump also so I just replaced both. If you let your car sit for awhile, you can start it but it will immediatley die because they is no fuel pressure. Your tank will naturally build pressure but just enough to get the car to turn over once. The fuel pumps are very easy to change.
Theres only ONE fuel pump. Its in the drivers tank! The passengers tank has a syphon jet pump that works off the pressure of the drivers side tank pump. You need to check out the following things:
- Do you have any fuel pressure at the fuel rail?
- Have you ever changed your fuel filter? If not, that would be advisable also.

The electrical pump in the driver's tank is the only one supplying fuel to the engine. Fuel pressure check is a very good place to start as well as the electrical connector on the driver's side tank.
I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the terminals on the fuel pump, added techron and 5 gallons of gas and she fired up with a little effort. running just peachy now. looks like I was victim of the faulty gas reading plauge.
