Default Yeah, I know, ANOTHER column lock thread...

Okay, so I've read pretty much all of the column lock threads here, the whole time thinking, "Mine works fine! It's worked fine for 7+ years, and it will continue to!"

So, of course, I drove to lunch today and the damn column locked up when I started up to go back to the office.

I tried jerking the steering wheel, removing fuses 23 and 25, and even disconnecting the battery. I resorted to violent jerks of the wheel...no luck. Now I'm angry with myself - I read the thread about who hasn't installed a CLB the other day and was chatting with a friend about how it's a big problem on the C5's, but made sure to tell him how mine worked perfectly. It was him who I ended up calling to give me a ride... hehe

So, I went back to my car tonight for one last series of steering wheel jerks and fuse pulling. Nothing. So, I removed the knee bolster and steering column covers, beat the column lock witha ratchet out of desperation, and BAM! It unlocked!

Okay, so now I am a firm proponent of the CLB - I ordered one tonight. My question is, can I simply disconnect the column lock after it is released and deal with the Service Column messages, etc, until I get and install the CLB? It's a 2000 MN6 that hasn't had any CL-related recalls performed. Any problem with this?

If it's not had any of the recalls, you might unplug the column lock harness and it should drive ok and just give you anoying messages each time you drive it which you can of course reset your DIC. I drove mine for a month like this without any problem.

Thanks for the input, John! I came across the DIY CLB instructions you wrote up and was considering doing that. Have you had any problems with the relay in this setup? Is that Omron relay readily available?

The CLB I built hasn't had a single error message since I installed it a few years ago and I drive her pretty hard at the track and stuff. Yes all the parts are readily available. If I remember correctly, the relay is like $14 which is why GM would never choose it.

My A4 1998 Coupe Vette has on it only 4.5K miles and I didnt wanted to install the CLB, but I think I will buyit to avoid the future problem..

On Ebay are 2 sellers, Adaptive Performance and doctor dons both with good feedback, I bought for my last 97 Vette the one from Thunder Racing, but I think I might build my own, can you give us the instructions?

Thanks

Someone hosted my instructions, but I can't remember who. Email me and I'll send them to you.
