Does exhaust volume equal power?
I just switched my Vararam out for a K&N FIPK.......... I know, I know it kills me to do it because I have had every intake on the market and times at the strip have shown the VR to be king period.
HOWEVER my car is getting a tigershark front and I can not use the VR soooooo I got the K&N and drilled some holes in the shroud under the filter. The exhaust tone seems a little more subdued now and when I shift at 3.5k it used to give a little pop (like a very small backfire sound) but does not do it anymore.
My questions are
1) does the decrease in exhaust volume mean my car is not breathing as well and I am not getting all I can out of the car?
2) does the lack of this small pop between shifts show that the airflow coming in is smoother and is not causing a hiccup?

Its pretty embarrassing when you learn that the hardway some evening on the street - especially if your girl is in the car with you. NOT
I've noticed that there are some Mustang GTs running around with a nice exhaust sound but they are wimps when it comes to power.
When you said "volume" I assume you meant loudness and not the amount of exhaust flow. Higher flow does mean more power because it lets the engine breathe better. More air = More Power.

My first post may not have been clear. Here is the deal, I changed air intakes from VR to FIPK with no other mods done to the car it is quieter now. Does this mean I have less airflow than when using the VR? Thanks
Not necessarily. Simple things like bends, material used, length, etc can change tone and volume. I seriously doubt there is a difference in flow enough to alter power or AF ratios by any meaningful amount.
