I know that you are not supposed to drive a steady speed during break-in, but does anyone know exactly what needs to be done. My concern is I pick the car up this weekend, and it is highway all the way to the house. Driving slow on the highway is asking for trouble.
Vary the rpm's at break in, is more important than than watching the speed. Not keeping the engine at a constant rpm for prolonged periods of time is the best break in proceedure for any motor. Have Fun with your new toy!
:D
I will pass along what I was told by a "certain person" at the Museum when I picked up my car:
For the 1st 500 miles:
1. No cruise control
2. No hard braking (& don't put yourself in situations where you might have to...)
3. Vary the speed - both the engine speed and actual over the ground speed - we kept it between 70-90 for the first day, changing between 3rd & 4th in the A4, 5th & 6th in the Z06; after the 1st day, all bets were off! :D
4. No WOT
5. 55mph? Fuhgedabouddit!
6. Enjoy the car!
We picked up my car in BG, and Karen's in Memphis, and drove back to CA both times. My car has 36K miles on it in two years, and I've had zero problems with engine or drivetrain. Karen's has 7K since July - ditto.
All of the above are excellent suggestions. Try to find some back roads to make it more fun, and remember that it is not just the engine you are "breaking -in", but the entire drive train. Take it easy as long as you can stand it.....enjoy! :D

I second the motion on using secondary roads. I had about a 350 mi ride home on a brand new car, and had the same concerns. Plotted a route using all 2-lane state roads, and had a great time. Didn't have to worry about traffic or stone chips, had plenty of opportunity to vary speed and use different gears, and lots of little towns to go thru ..
Thanks for all the input. I have now mapped a route that will start with about a 150 miles of back roads and then about 75 miles of highway, 30 miles back road and then more highway. This should help me keep the speed varying, and since the initial leg will be slower driving it will give the motor time to work in a little before I take the speed up. Just hope I can keep the speed down

It ain't gonna happen. Wouldn't be prudent.... Just don't mash the GO pedal realhard and you'll be fine. We did what Steve recommends and so far 5500 miles since August and no problems  on your new Corvette. Great color combination and we want some pictures when you bring the baby home..... :yesnod: :yesnod:
