Default C5 Weight Reduction

Ok, so here is my situation. I am looking for a decent platform to go road racing with. I am really interested in the C5 but I want to get the weight down to a reasonable level. Something in the 2700-2800 range. The car will be tagged and occasionally street driven but that is simply not its purpose in life. I am from Oklahoma...No emissions. Has anyone had any experience with dropping the weight of either the coupe or an FRC? I simply cannot afford all carbon fiber body work.

Half way down this thread are the wts and measures of the C5. You will see what weights are and what you can elliminate.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=984927

To start get rid of:

Carpet
Radio speakers & radio

Stock seats, get yourself some aluminum seats from Kirkey or Ultra-Shield. If possible only have the drivers seat.

Change tires and wheels. Run flats and stock wheels are too heavy
Get CCW wheels and Hoosier R compounds

Get ride of your head lights and just put the covers back on.

take off the stock headers, cats and exhaust, put on aftermarket OFF Road Lts, X-pipe and straight pipes

Light wt battery saves 12 lbs.

take out the AC condenser and all AC equipment.

That will get you started.

Then adding the cage will add wt.

Now if your going SCCA T1 you have a minimum wt requirnment

Good Luck

With out trying too had I just figured that you could brobably get rid of at least 385-391 lbs without going to carbon fiber stuff. You wouldn't need the street crap like A/C or a radio, insulation, non-runflat tires, lighter wheels, LT headers off road X-pipe, No wiper fluid set up, no air pump for emissions, So far you only have to spend money on the exhaust system, oh yeah, you don't need an entire exhaust system another 25-35 lbs gone. so we are at around 426 lbs which brings you to around 2820 lbs. If you spent money on a carbon fiber vented hood and fixed headlights we lose another 27 lbs which brings you to 2793 lbs. They tell me you can lose another 20-30 lbs on Brake rotors with aluminum hats, and another 12-24 lbs on light weight calipers. That stuff is not cheap but necessary if you go road racing. So take another 50lbs off the 2793 which brings you to 2743. Having said all that it will not be hard to bring the RWHP to 380 with a cam only that brings you to 7.218 power to weight ratio. I think a stock C6Z427 is at 7.0 power to weight ratio. Get a little more creative and you would be very close as far as an over all power to weight ratio.
