I have a targa top that has a broken guide pin. I have tried to drill it (with no luck) so I can use an easy out to remove the remaining piece of guide pin. the remaining piece seems to be hardned steel.
Is there some special kind of drill bit I can get to drill the piece out?
Had to go to the old toolbox to find it-- as an ex aircraft tech. we used these on titanium with great results.
No 40 micro hole solid carbide drill.
Shure you can get any size though, we had several.
The PN is 76552504.
If you want a picture, that will cost you extra, actually stand by, Ill go get the cam.
Here are a few pics, its hard to get one of the drill bit, but basicly its double fluted high carbon steel.
Also suggest an easy out like the one on the right, better bite and much stronger!
Chances are it is case hardened - softer in the middle. Check hardware/Home Depot for a name brand TiN (titanium nitride) coated drill - Dewalt, etc. These are gold at the tip.
Use a center punch to get a start, then drill at high RPM. Peck the drill (push, withdraw, push), then use the Easy Out (twist into hole counter clockwise).
If it has a thread, it should come. If it is press fit, you will have to use progressively larger drills until the pin is really hollow and collapses.
The ones I have are from Gulfstream aviation, dont know where they came from.
A good bet would be aircraft spruce or any other aircraft hardware wholesaler.
Ill do some research and let you know!
