Default How bad is this?

My car threw a C1287 Steering Sensor Rate Malfunction code. I was just curious what could cause this and how urgent it is that I have it seen about. I tried searching but came up with nill. Thanks!

Do a search on Active Handling. Forum members Bill Dearborn and Trussme have great write-ups on the components of this system and the error codes / fixes.

If the C1287 posted while you were driving the car, you should have seen a "Service Active Handling" message on the DIC, and the TC/AH warning lamp light on the dashboard. For that ignition cycle AH would be disabled after the message was displayed.

If this is a "one time" occurance, I'd delete the code and ignore it, but if you see the code reoccur in the near future, you need to look into replacing the Steering Wheel Position Sensor (SWPS).
