My dealer is not completely helpful. Have a 2001 and want to store DEC-MAR in heated storage. Mandatory
battery disconnect. Is there any precaution on disconnect? Is there any protocol for reconnect or reprogramming
or will it be towed in the spring???? Any information or experience will helpful. Thank you.
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (sy308)
Just disconnect the Negative and you'll be fine. Or you can attach a battery tender! NOT trickle charger..but Tender! Available at Sears I believe!
I'm storing as well and here is my 10 point storage prep list:
1. Change Oil
2. Add Sta-Bil Fuel freshener to Gas (Sta-bil is poured in gas tank prior to fillup.)
3. Top off Gas Tank
4. Place Plastic cover underneath the car. (For me, its 8 ft wide X 15 ft long)
5. Place padding underneath each tire, to prevent flatspotting
6. Pump up each tire to 40PSI
7. Crack windows down 1 inch for air circulation
8. Unlatch top(Coupe & vert)
9. place desicant packs inside to remove moisture
10. wipe weatherstripping with silicon grease to prevent cracking
Cover vehicle, and let her sleep till Springtime!!!

sy308:
Don't forget when you disconnect the battery your radio will go into the "Theft Deterant" locking. Make sure you write your unlocking code down so next spring you can get the tunes back.
I disconnected my battery last year and the car started right up after reconnecting the battery. Took awhile to remember the radio codes however.

I just bought the tender from Sears a couple of days ago. The regular price is about $75 but they were on sale for $35. Not sure how long the sale lasts though. Just thought I would give you guys the heads up on the sale. :)
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (sy308)
If the car is brand new you set in your own code. If it is used and the previous owner set the code, you will have to get ahold of him to get his code. If you can't get a previous code you will have to go to the dealer, they apparently have a master code.
Setting the code instructions are in the Owner's Manual.
If you need to go the dealer to have them unlock it, bring your checkbook!
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (sy308)
Here's what I did for winter:
*washed and dried
*vacuumed interior and did the glass
*swept garage
*added fuel stabilizer
*filled other 1/2 of tank w/gas
*ran it for a few miles
*drove it onto a tarp and covered it *hooked up battery tender
*pulled out top, rolled down windows, and popped both trunk and hood
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (Stingray1967)
I do all these things plus put it in a carbag with dessicant. I am going to pull the battery and put it in my basement on the battery tender. There is a warning about checking it and you can't in the carbag. Another good idea I just found on the C4 forum is to park the car with the tires on 2" foam to prevent flat spotting.
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (Buckmaster)
I plan on cleaning the car, changing the oil, puttin' on the ZAINO, and then driving it for 10 minutes every 2 weeks, just to keep the good feelin' goin'. I hope that 2 weeks doesn't give me the flat spots but I guess that I'll find out!
Re: Store for winter: DISCONNECT BATTERY???????? (Buckmaster)
I run it now and then for at least enough time for the temps (Water & Oil) to come to operating level. If I can't drive it due to weather, I'll at least move it forward or back to a new spot in the garage to prevent flat spotting. The thorough warm up cooks off any moisture in the engine or exhaust system. Also, run the A/C while you're doing this, good for the seals in that system. I did this religiously with my '88 C4 and never had a problem in the 11 years I owned it.
I guess I'm in the minority here but I do not disconnect the battery. I change the oil, wash it and Zaino it, cover it....and start it up every once in awhile. Some will say you shouldn't do that because you are really not helping anything because you are not actually driving it and lubing up all the seals, but it works for me and my car is perfect. No problems. Good luck. :)
