I just registered with this forum. I have only had my 01 vert for approx. 2 months and my wife and I have enjoyed the short time we have had it. It is just used for a weekend driver. After reading the many post about battery problems I decided to go out and pull the battery tray and start checking things even though I have been under the hood detailing everythin since I got it. The previous owner had put a lower end battery in it and I decided after reading this forum the red top was the way to go. By the way it was extremley clean under the tray. Thanks and hello to everyone.
do the red top they had some bad ones in the past they are ok now i hope its been 2 years no problems i think next time its the yellow top its better yet
IF you are going to let your C5 sit for long periods of time without driving it, (3-5 days), then get a Battery Tender, perferably one with a 1 amp max charging rate and put it on. Your battery will last MUCH longer.
A C5 can completely drain a battery in 2 weeks if not driven.

I have let my car sit for a month and it still started fine. The battery was low but not enough to cause any issues. Yes, the battery will discharge slowly if the car sits and over a long period of time, it will go dead. There is a constant 25 milliamp draw due to the BCM security system and PCM memory keep alive circuit. The RFA module is also on all the time to monitor FOBs.
When you shut your car down, with in approx TWO minutes, the BCM will go to sleep and should only draw 25 milliamperes. (Some model years draw a little more or less.)
If there is something that is staying on that shouldn't, yes, it will kill a battery in a few days. If the battery is aging it will not last as long as it should.
My Z06 is only five years old, but the Optima in it is at least eight years old. I don't remember exactly, but it was also in my previous '98 C5, too. It still works perfectly, good choice.
