For simple safety sake, its best to remove the ground lead first and put it on last. This prevents you from accidently grounding the wrench when on the positive terminal and welding it to the frame and/or blowing the battery up in your face.

Standard and safest practice is to remove the ground lead first and put it on last. 
Remember!!,,,The correct torque for the battery terminals (97-03 C5's ) is 11 ft/lbs for proper battery to cable compression connection.
