gearshift locking
New here, thanks for any help or comments in advance. Have a 97 automatic. The gearshift has been locking up in park. The button will push down but the shifter will not move. Pressing the brake pedal and turning it off and on and physically pulling on it will sometimes help, but usually it just lets go when it's ready, It's been to different shops four times and actually torn down twice with no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, it's intermittent, usually after it's been sitting a few days. It also seems to help if I put it in neutral and then turn it off, but again, not always..any ideas?

Automatics have a cable that is actuated by the brake peddle. You have to have the brake applied to release the shifter. If that cable is bad or out of adjustment, it will give you the same problems your expierencing.
