Default MAF Screen Removal

I have a 98, and I want to remove the screen from the mass air flow sensor. Everyone says it's easy, but my problem is that my airbox seems to be attached to the front of the car with two screws (of some kind) way down low (hard to even reach). Is this normal? I can get everything else loose & ready to take out, but I cannot seperate the portion of the airbox closest to the engine from the MAF until I get it all out, right? When I look at the installation instructions from the Vortex Rammer, it just says to unhook all of the junk I've unhooked, and pull the whole mess out. No mention of these screws.
Help!

rdochterman,

The C5 air box is mounted to two "studs" that fit into two rubber gromments, which are mounted in the air box lid. the studs are fastened to the front bumper brace.

The easiest way to loosen and remove the air box assembly is to open the hood and reach between the front of the hood and the front filler panel. Use both hands, one on each side of the air box, and push toward the engine. The air box will "pop off" the studs and enable you to remove the entire assembly from the engine compartment side. Also loosen the clamp at the throttle body and the two electical connections. Remove the entire assembly.

The rubber gromments often pop off the air box and fall below. Do not loose them - they are easily pushed back into the air box holes. I put a little silicone dielectric grease onto the inside of the gromments, so that they slide onto the studs easier.

Good luck.

Since you have a 98, I would recommend first trying the Breathless MAF ends with air foils. That way you do not have to hack out your screen from the factory maf end. Plus youll increase your airflow capability. A MAF Translator may be needed to optimize that mod.

Kewlbrz is right; try a set of MAF ends and save your stockers in case you want/need to return to the way God made the car.... :) BTW, welcome to the Forum. Please post again and let us know how you are doing with that mod. :seeya

First of all, turn off your caps lock. It indicates your yelling.

Removing the screen as GM engineering finally got around to doing with the Z06, is an ok mod. Like I said above, it may need some tuning with a maft, but most will be fine.

If you wish to understand what happens to the engine and PCM when performing mods. Please read my write up here first:

I have a 98 with a vortex. I installed it alone, w/ no other mods. I then removed the screen, & there was a noticable difference. No problems at all. I did a relearn & runs awesome. So i decided to try the nylon MAF ends with no foil. It ran like CRAP! Did a relearn & same thing. Put the stock ends back on & ran awesome again. I beleive you need a MAFT to use the ends. The other members have good points, but i felt the need to tell you since we both have 98's. Newer models seem to have more problems when screens are removed. Screen removal also seems to work better with Vortex than with other systems. I say DO it! Hold off on the screens until you get a MAFT. SCOTT

I pulled my screen on my 99 with 1,000 miles..... I did it on the dyno and saw 8 rwhp across the entire rpm!!!!!! The car runs great and has never spit a code out. I did the same thing to my girlfriends WS6 on the dyno, her T/A picked up 9 rwhp..... runs great as well! It's the only free mod that works and is trouble free! Now I have a few buddies that ported their MAF, and they get codes now and then.... but pulling the screen if done right will not!
