Default help with leak..

Guys,
I have been tracking down a leak in my ac system and i think i finally found it. I borrowed a sniffer from a friend, and tracked it down to the connection on the back of the compressor. Is there a seal in there that needs to be replaced, or do i have to replace the whole line? Anyone had expirence with this?
Thanks
Jason

Yes, there is a rubber seal, actually, two of them, one for each line. Usually O rings but sometimes a metal/rubber washer. Available at your local flaps. If your going to do it yourself you'll need your buddies vac pump. Not a real tough job. See the DIY sticky at the top of this forum for recharge tips, etc. HTH

Thanks for the info. I read a little and now I have another question. If i break the line loose (and collect the gas of course ), do i have to put any oil back in the system, or will it stay in the components.
Thanks again

If you pump the system down to atmospheric pressure OR release the pressure out of the low pressure side very slowly,,,, the oil will stay in the system. If you let the pressure out suddenly, the rapidly escaping pressure will evacuate the oil!!

You really should pump the system down VACUUM IT OUT after opening it to atmosphere and then refill it with exactly the required charge.

We have a Robinair automatic system that does it all. As Bill states, anytime the system is going to be opened....or HAS been opened it needs to be pulled down & evac'd properly.

That is what i will try to do. If i vaccume it out, will the oil come out of the system, or will I have to remove the compoent and drain them?

How do I make sure the oil gets where is should? do i just need to get the referigant with the oil already in ot or do I have to pour it in the Compressor?
Thanks

You need not be concerned with oil if you just replace the o rings, vac and recharge. The vac pump will remove little, if any, oil.
The oil that is presently in the system will remain where it is. The standard 12 oz can that you will use does not contain oil.

You can buy a can that contains oil but you won't need it. We only need to add oil if we replace a component that contains oil with a new
component that does not, ie., compressor, evap, condenser, etc. HTH
