I've only put 4500 miles since I had my tranny rebuilt for the first time and it's happened again. The way it went was very unlike the first time where the syncros started to grind until it finally stopped shifting right. This time I left hard, powershifted second and then BLAM! The car was well into second gear and it just broke :(
Symptoms: neutral in all gears w/ a bit of grinding noises. I don't think I shattered any gears, just screwed up the forks or synchros again. It is such a nice day I'm not gonna let it get to me.
I had the car flat bedded over to MTI where I will have Jeff fix it again. I hope it's nothing too bad. I'd like to have her back before next weekend.
sorry to hear that... it is great day too. may want to give up powershifting
Thanks...Yeah, you're right about powershifting. It no good for these trannies but I'm not gonna stop doing it, it's too much fun. I'm just gonna have to keep a spare tranny around :D I was just hoping this last rebuild would've lasted a little longer...but, I powershift her every time I get a chance, even on the bottle.
BTW, I had been hearing some noise from the tranny/rear end area for the last month...she was trying to tell me something. :(
I'm not impressed with the clutch or tranny/tq tube setup in our cars. Getting my 2nd rebuild done as we speak.
You can upgrade your stock Aluminum 3/4 Fork to a Steel 3/4 fork while you are in there. If you want the part number & source, let me know. I think it's made for the Viper or the C5R. Mine's being upgraded while we're in there. There were no other parts to strengthen that I could find.
Mellow- I am VERY interested in those part numbers. What have I got to lose? I appreciate it.
Rick, Robert- Thanks. Hopefully it's not too bad. BTW, there was some really strange happenings at Post Oak lastnight; almost a brawl...and I got to run Peter's Supra. To try and keep up I had to powershift...an omen perhaps. It was good fun.
Jason- your brother must not be very hard on the tranny. Does he powershift? With the kinda torque figure he should be having problems if he's bangin' on her. In comparison, I've got 533 Rwtq.
Mellow- i agree with you. I have owwned 4 ZF 6 speed c4's before my 98. I HATE my 98's clutch & tranny. It feels wimpy & week. One day it works great, the next it feels like im shifting with the clutch only halfway in. Sometimes i got to take off from a stop & it pops out of 1st with a slight gring! My c4's were awesome tranny wise. But i guess I'm stuck because there's no way I'll but the A4. SCOTT
I guess yall are correct about the rigidty of the C5 drivetrain Vs. the C4. I've never owned a C4 but I know the C5 is more relaxed in that dept. The Corvette engineers wanted a more friendly/less effort system. Well, they got one alright with 3 times the syncro parts than previously. The reason for my last rebuild was a measly $10 part. If it wasn't there then there wouldn't have been such a failure imo.
Another thing to consider is the torque tube and it's effects on the tranny. There is a lot of mass that needs to be manipulated when shifting.
