If there is a keyway machined in the hub you want the ATI tool. Don't get the one that end drills the crankshaft, the ATI puts the pin in the crank like a key would be set.
Are crank pinning tools specific to their brand of balancer? For instance, it someone uses the ATI pinning kit does that mean that he'd have to use the ATI balancer as well?

Yes and no. I have an ASP which doesn't have a 'keyway'. I called A&A and rented theirs. They sent me one that pins the side of the crank lengthwise like a keyway and they also provided a drill bit and pin to install. There are other pinning tools that pin the crank across the radius. Magnusson has it's own pinning kit that they provide when you buy one.

However, if the balancer you have, such as an ATI balancer that has a keyway already provided you should get the pinning kit designed for that part. You can get the pinning kit you need as a rental from one of the supporting vendors on this forum.

I was thinking about pinning the crank if I ever did a cam in the car. I know it's cheap insurance to do it, but wasn't sure if using the ATI kit would force me to use their balancer an opposed to re-using the stock balancer.
I can tell you the ATI kit works for the ATI and the Powerbond. Don't remember the keyway size, but it is standard. Someone posted a good photo of the pin in the crank after using the ATI kit recently.
