than if this were true why is it that the performance ones do not have those small holes its wide open with two thin wires streched across

Try using "search this forum" (in red banner) in C5 Tech, using keywords "descreened MAF"...there's plenty of past discussions about the pros/cons of doing this modification...

I hear there is a slight performance gain but not worth the codes you may get.

You're probably not going to see any noticeable performance increase in a street driven car w/o other modifications.
From past discussions that I recall...some of the C5/Z06 cars had the MAF descreened from the factory (my '04 Z16 did)...interestingly enough, the factory began using screened MAFs again in the C6/Z06 cars.

The way the MAF sensor works is that it measures the airflow through a very small opening in the center of the sensor and sends a variable voltage out its electrical connector to the ECU. The ECU is programmed with the diameter of the sensor and computes the total airflow into the throttle body based on the flow through the center section. The reason for the screen is to ensure that the airflow going into the center portion of the sensor is straight and smooth so that the ECU's computation will be accurate. If the flow is not smooth then the ECU computation of total flow through the barrel will be off. In my opinion, removing the screen will quite possibly allow a more turbulent airflow through the MAF sensor than without the screen.
What small opening are you refering to? The MAF on a C5 uses a "hot wire" type system. It outputs a signal, to the PCM, based on the current required to maintain the wires temperature at a given airflow.

I do agree on not removing the screen.

I cut and pasted the wrong paragraph. Strike from the thread. My oversight.

Thanks for pointing it out!

I do not agree with removing the screen either.
