check engine lite came on and since i was taking her to the dealer anyway i had them scan it and here is the question. they said the knock sensors were causing the lite, although i havnt washed the engine the tech said often times moisture gets down under the manifold and causes corrosion at the terminal connection which can be the problem. he said you (meaning me) could clean them and may be okay but they recommend replacing them to the tune of around 600 bucks i appreciate your input
I just replaced both myself- if you are somewhat handy, you can do it. Just need to move the intake manifold. You can get Wells aftermarket sensors for about $50 each (there is 2 of them).

Local auto parts store like Pep Boys, Autozone, Advanced Auto, or if you prefer OEM your dealer or www.gmpartshouse.com. GM used this sensor in other engines such as cadillacs and saturns.
You can look it up at www.autozone.com. On my 98 there were two different versions of knock sensors which I didnt know which it was until I removed the sensor from the vehicle. In 2002 I *think* they got it down to just one sensor version.
I had to go to two different stores in order to get the sensors. One from autozone and the other from a local store called salvo auto parts.

If your going to do it, you'll need the gaskets too. When I replaced mine, the rear one had oil in it so I replaced the wellplugs, the valley gasket and the connector for the 2 sensors while I was down there. Probably $150-$200 in parts total.
I did mine on my 98,I used silicone around the sensors and base gaskets to keep the oil out with the original gaskets being used.I also rplaced the harness as mine was pinched from the intake manifold. It took an afternnon with a set of hand tools and the fuel line disconnect tool set.It was a fairly easy job.Jer
