Default Blackwing question ?

Hi

Before l ask my question l already have a blackwing and it's been sitting in my house for over a year cleaned and ready to install.

What should l expect form it? 2002 coupe auto 3.15 rear.

Just curious and l tried the search and it came back with a zillion posts but couldn't find what l was looking for.

Thnaks

Alan

Your question is ambiguous...are you asking how much it's worth if you sell it, or (I suspect your question is) how much horsepower you can expect by installing it?
$150-175 if for sale
maybe 3-5hp if installing it

Slight improvement in SOTP. Not sure if you will see any real HP gain

Default Sorry l am not selling it.

Hi

What l was asking is not the hp gain as much as what l should hear or feel. Is the engine more responsive at the start or mid point or top end.

It seems like a lot of money for a 5 hp gain!

Thanks

Alan

PS l am keeping it stock besides the intake.

The BLACKWING might produce more intake noise and might produce some SOTP feel...both dependent upon your hearing and buttnometer calibrations...

Hi

You must work for NASA with the phrase "Buttnometer".

Thanks you answered my high tech question.

The blackwing is one of the better filters in my opinion, and you will pick up some hp. The exact amount is not well documented, since very few people actually dyno, install a filter, then dyno again. Keep in mind, as I know you're proably well aware, for the engine to really benifit from improvements in the intake, you would of course have to make equal improvements in the exhaust.
I installed a blackwing and pulled the cats on my wife's car, and it definitly improve the performance.

Thanks

...no, I don't work for NASA, but I did stay at a HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS once.
The point is that it's all very subjective and it's your car to do with as you please. If you ask the question of ten people, you're more than likely to get ten different answers. Don't believe the hype of the manufacturers of hp/tq benefits of products, either.
The BLACKWING is a good after market filter with full synthetic media. It's probably the most popular filter chosen by owners. It looks more sexy than oem (see, that's very subjective ).
Whether it performs better is debatable, which you might have read about in your research. Many firmly believe that a paper filter is the only filter that should be used on a Corvette C5/Z06 or any car for that matter. They've read the "latest" study on air filters. Many believe that any type of oiled gauze filter can be harmful to the motor. In my experience, that isn't the case.
I installed a BLACKWING and "ice box" CAI cover on my Z16 when I first got my car. I did a lot of research and liked it best of any other after market filter. I elected to use an after market filter because in the long run of ownership and PM on my cars, I like having a "lifetime" air filter over buying generic paper filters.
The key is cleaning the filter media regularly (I prefer every other oil change), using specific manufacturers cleaning kits and oil sparingly on a dry media. You should never see a contaminated MAF with that care.
Unfortunately, I got intermittent lean bank codes, probably because of my 5,200 ft altitude, maybe because of the reported '04 Z06-Z16 leaner factory tune. In any event, I didn't want to spend another $500 and drive 300 miles round trip for a dyno tune.
I returned to a modified oem Z06-Z16 air intake with a K&N filter. I get the same sound, same performance and no more codes. Beauty (sexy) is in the eye of the beholder...

I have a 04z and did the BW and then added an X pipe and Borla stingers .... Dyno results WhTq = 359.0 WhPw = 364.2

Only time I see a lean code is when I take a long trip, buty tweaking that will be my nexty project.

I got both when I installed mine. I have OK hearing and average sized butt cheeks.

The Blackwing improves airflow - with heads, cam, headers, etc the ability of the car to take in more air improves. If you block this then the power add ons abilities to improve power will be compromised. You are simply allowing more air to flow through the engine with less restriction.

The Blackwing will give about 8HP maybe and an after market exhaust would be minimal. Put in 3.42 or 3.70 gears and get a tune.Gears are a very good bang for the buck. The after market exhaust will give you more sound than performance.

Any gain in HP will be nominal, but you will get more air to the engine as compared to the very restrictive stock air box. That's always a good thing. On the other hand, more air can mean more chance that contaminants get through. The stock paper filters are more restrictive thereby reducing the possibility of very fine contaminants getting past. I clean my Blackwing often from the outside with a shop vac. I remove it once a year and thoroughly clean it inside and out, then very carefully apply a thin layer of the oil that comes with the cleaning kit. I don't like the way the can sprays the oil out, so I use a regular paint brush to apply it and ensure a thin even coating. I've seen no evidence of any oil residue inside the MAF.

Default Blackwing

My experience was as follows: This was my first mod ; I have an 02 with auto and 2:73 rear. At first, it started and ran fine; I took it out for a 20 minute 'comptuer re-learn'. After that, I nailed it a few times and felt the throttle response was better and it seemed to pull harder and rev quicker. As an old school drag racer, it felt maybe a tenth quicker. Combining the intake with a Corsa Indy cat-back gave me an actual 2 tenths in the quarter- mile as well as more intake and exhaust noise(which I enjoy immensely). After that initial run, I did hear a rather loud engine noise that sounded like a valve tap. It was disconcerting enough for me to shut the engine off. It lessened upon re-starting, and then disappeared and has not returned. I had it computer tuned at Carlisle the following summer and it showed no codes.. Never did figure out what it was... Any ideas, anyone?

I was surprised by the improvement with only the addition of the blackwing to my 2003 convert, A4, 3.15 rear. According to my source at Callaway, they dyno'd the blackwing and was worth 12 HP, their Honker was worth 16.8hp. I am assuming this was on their test bed.
