Don't worry, I always have extra parts left after working on my C5. Just save them, maybe someday you can build a second car.

Just kidding , I have never taken apart my gage cluster and can't help you. Does part have any number on it?

Good luck !

Exactly the same happend to me.
I changed my speedometer and after putting everything back in place I found that little bushing of plastic lying on the floor under steering wheel.
I have no clue where it came from and would highly appreciate if anyone could help us out here.
Thanks

I have the same magical plastic piece left over after I did my double din and bezel install. I couldn't find where it went so it is in my tool box now. I haven't found any negative effect from it not being reinstalled. Mine was also lying on the floormat under my steering column.

Chevrolet puts that piece behind the gage cluster on all Vettes. It does nothing and is designed to fall out when the cluster is removed so you will go crazy when reassembling and waste time trying to figure out where it goes. This way you will get p.o.'d and regret taking your car apart. I did my gages a few years ago and don't remember where it went.

It is is part of that steering column. I believe it goes to the passanger side bolt of the two bolts that hold the steering colum in place.

Doug is correct, helps 'locate' the column to the dash support

btw, the support it bolts to is made of Magnesium, cool isn't it?

So in the end this piece does not have any function other than being an locator.

Thank you GM, nice engineering

I think this was the best explaination

It's better than the ballpoint pen that my friend found behind the dash of his Cobra. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the design.
