Exactly the same happend to me.
I changed my speedometer and after putting everything back in place I found that little bushing of plastic lying on the floor under steering wheel.
I have no clue where it came from and would highly appreciate if anyone could help us out here. Thanks
Jan
Sorry c5mtl i do not mean to hijack your thread but I'm having exactly the same issue here. So I'm trying to help you as well...
Some more pics if it might help us to get answers.
This plastic piece is 1/2" x 1/2" oval shaped little bastard
I have the same magical plastic piece left over after I did my double din and bezel install. I couldn't find where it went so it is in my tool box now. I haven't found any negative effect from it not being reinstalled. Mine was also lying on the floormat under my steering column.
Chevrolet puts that piece behind the gage cluster on all Vettes. It does nothing and is designed to fall out when the cluster is removed so you will go crazy when reassembling and waste time trying to figure out where it goes. This way you will get p.o.'d and regret taking your car apart. I did my gages a few years ago and don't remember where it went.

I think this was the best explaination
It's better than the ballpoint pen that my friend found behind the dash of his Cobra. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the design.
