I have done a tail light mod that essentially requires me to add 3 bulbs in each tail light position...am I breaking any rules by splicing in additional bulb sockets into the existing wiring harness? Meaning will the resulting power drain be supported? The new lights will be LED.
I wouldn't think you'd have a problem as long as they are run in parallel and the resistance in the LED bulbs matches the applied voltage. I’d wait for a second opinion too, I’m pretty bushed right now…
I don't understand what all the bulbs are doing though, are you adding eight additional bulbs to the brake circuit, or is each bulb a separate circuit i.e., park/ turn/ brake?
Each bulb is going into a 3157 socket, so each one would blink, glow and brighten accordingly...because the lenses are totally clear, I need as much red as I can get to not draw unwanted attention to my rear end, so each light will function the exact same....Brake/Turn/Park...
If you don't wire it correctly and provide an equivalent resistance as to what the current bulbs provide you may get this failure:
DTC C1295
Circuit Description The electronic brake control module (EBCM) sources 5 volts on the stop lamp switch signal circuit when the stop lamp switch is inactive. The voltage is supplied a ground path through the stop lamp bulbs.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The ignition is ON.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The stop lamp switch input voltage is between 1.87 volts and 5.03 volts for 2 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
If equipped, the following actions occur:
The EBCM disables the TCS/VSES for the duration of the ignition cycle.
The Traction Control and Active Handling indicator turns ON.
The DIC displays the following messages: Service Traction System
Service Active Handling
The ABS remains functional.

If you are putting in LEDs then you might not pull enough power....the turn signal might hyperflash and I believe the ABS system may get upset.
You may need to add a resistor. Ask the LED supplier, he will know.
