Default Mod day gone VERY WRONG!

Today is Sunday and I had my 2 budies with ZO6s come over to have some upgrades. We had ordered 3 sets of the Doug Rippie front brake cooling ducts and I went to work on the first Z06.

First I changed his brake lines to SS lines then we flushed his fluid and upgraded it to some hi temp fluid. We installed the cooling ducts after a lot of cutting, cursing, and flexing and they did look awesome once installed and I was happy. That is untill we went to mount up the wheels and check clearance. They rubbed bad. Well, this vette was fellow forum member NVMYC5s Z06 and he has HREs 18s in the front an after measuring his 10 3/4" width we relized that the past 2.5 hours were a compleate waste of time  My gripe here is that the instructions state that ducts are good for wheels up to 18" . . no warning about width :mad My front wheel width is 9 3/4" and will install the ducts and see if they fit. NVMYC5 was very bummed when he left here, felt his car had been rapped :cry

Ok Car #2: We remove Bassani offroad Ypipe and Bassani XPipe and then attempt to bleed clutch.. .. hahaha not a chance. I dont know how you are supposed to do this. We removed the inspection pannel with like a million 8mm bolts!! I just do not see how you can get a 12mm wrench or socket wrench on that bolt in that little opening, hell ya cant even see the bleed screw up there!! So we gave up there and bolted his car back togeather with stock cats so he could breath clean air again :D

I was so tired after all this I did not get a chance to work on my car :( Im gonna drink some more Jack and Dr. Pepper and get to my happy place now!!

The bleeder is a PITA to get to, but it can be done. Take a look at the slave throw out bearing/actuator assembly and bleeder valve outside the car if you can to get an idea of the orientation. Your best bet is to use a combination of 1/4" drive, extensions, and swivels. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had today. I too have hacked up my car to attempt to install the DRM cooling lines only to find out that they wont work on my F45 car with 10" wheels on it. Sounds like it was one of those days. :(

I would like start by saying, thank you for an A+ on effort....... :D

Just like to clarify that my front width is stock at 9.5in with only a 10mm wider front tire at 275mm. Its either the rim is slightly larger than 9.5in or the tire is slightly larger than 275mm . Thought it might be the offset but that dosn't explain the width difference .I just don't get it.....

Man what a day went from having stock brake ducts to having racing brake ducts to having nothing at all. Once you mod the stock ones to fit the DRMs there worthless after..:mad

On a positive note my brakes feel great no leaks and stopin hard :D

I owe ya a few Jack an Dp's

You gave me a little scare with your topic. I thought something went wrong with your cam mod.

I noticed that you have a 1/4 mile time of 12.60 with mods. I hope that is not with the B1 Cam, because I am expecting to run at least a 12.2-3 with the cam. I have already logged in a 12.68.

Go have another drink and relax!

the DRM front brake cooling ducts work fine with 17x9.5 wheels (275/40). this is what I run. there is some limitation on how far one can turn the steering wheel lock to lock with out hitting, so once the ducts are on no more (extreme) tight turns. some folks put a sticker on the steering wheel "remember ducts!" or just "DUCTS".

However, a quite common mistake, which I too initially made, is to judge the clearance (wheel to duct) with the car jacked up. this is not a valid measurement. the ducts will always hit the wheel with the car jacked up, and the wheel therefore drooping. evaluating if the ducts clear can Only be done with the car on the ground. if it makes ya feel any better, I ended up installing mine twice :)
I've never seen the directions, which I gather are sparse. I got one of the first sets made (so DRM says) and no documentation was ready at the time..

shiny side up

I had the same problem with the front ducts. I am running HRE 546 9.5"x18" front rims. Could not clear on turns. Sucked. MMS modified the ducts so that they cleared. Had to move them slightly and fix them into position. Result, no rubbing and cool front rotors. Bad news, the labor to modify the brake ducts was more then the cost of the ducts themselves. Live and learn!
