My boyfriend has been bugging me to get a bigger maf as he believes it will give me more power with my heads and cam. Is this true? Which maf should I buy as do not know much about these things? :seeya

Re: mass air flow question ('98 Six Speed)
Lori, Tell him that the size of the MAF is not that important, and in fact a bigger one may give some worse performance (just ask Steve Cole about this). The size of the regular MAF you are using is able to support higher output if your intake is allowed to breath better in other areas. Some people are able to get fantastic performance out of the one you have now.

Well put. The MAF and throttle body already outflow the intake manifold. As a result, I'd recommend getting a 2001/Z06 intake manifold if you want more flow.
There is definatly bennefit to going with a ported MAF, especially removing the screen. One of the first mods GM did in 2001 for all C5's was add the larger diameter truck MAF. In 02 they also removed the screen for the 02 LS6 motor.
I recommend going with something like the breathless performance maf ends, with airfoils.
Home tuning with a maf translator or custom PCM programming. If you can find or wait on someone to do it, to fully realize the potential of this mod may be necessary. Or you can wait for LS1 Edit and program your PCM yourself if you so choose and learn it.
WOW - a female with a Vette w/ Heads and Cam!?!?!

 Actually my boyfriend is a mechanic and insisted to install the heads and cam. I am more into the style than how fast it will go. I would have a sig but someone on this forum backed off in making me one. :cry

We carry the BPP Air foiled ends. We have many customers happy with the performance. Auto-Tap and a MAFTranslator are also good tools for the MAF tuning.
Removing the screen is a big plus, and you dont have to hack your stock ends to do that with aftermarket maf ends, not to mention opening up the diameter like GM ENGINEERS did in 2001 for all LS1's with the larger diameter truck MAF.
Before I had Lingenfelter do my engine work I had the BPP Maf. When LPE did the engine work they went back to the factory MAF because of computer tuning. I still have the BPP MAF and may reinstall when spring arrives. Will then tune with a MAF T and autotap . LPE also stated a larer MAF and larger throttle body were unnecessary additions. They use the stock MAF and throttle body up to the 427ci motor. Hope this helps. Whiteboy :chevy
I have the Breathless MAF ends with Air Foil on my '99 and Steve Cole's Powerloader Programming with great results.
Steve Coles programming is the key to this success. Without programming, you are altering the metering accuracy of the MAF and most likely leaning the car out.
Screens can be removed with rarely a problem, but ported MAF's are a no no in my book.
Also, when GM changed the size of the MAF, they accompanied this with a programming revision, so it is not the same thing as just plugging one in in your garage. :)
Good Luck,

Or if you dont want to wait for steve cole, tune the air/fuel ratio yourself with a MAF Translator and an OBD-II tool.
For those that want to fully understand what is going on at a fundemental level with ported or larger MAFs, and other mods see: http://www.vetteguru.com/mods/howto

Another great way of handling it, but it all comes down to the same thing....PROGRAMMING!!! :)
