Default Spark Plug wire HELP!

Getting ready to go to a show Sunday. Backed the car out to clean the engine and while at the (driver side, third back) #7? It broke. I pulled off the cover and pulled the wired out of the coil and my question is...there seems to be a rubber plug in where the spark plug should be. How do I get that rubber plug out to put in a new wire? And does the dealer sell one wire or just a set?

Default Get a new set of GM Red Performance wires from Gene

As far as I know you can't get just one wire. The black ones OEM except for Z06 cost a FORTUNE. The Red Performance ones are just over $50 from Gene and look GREAT. Same as the black ones only half the price and look much nicer. Check or change the plugs if they are high mileage. I did the works and car stopped hesitating at moderate acceleration. BIGHANK

If you can reach in with a pair of pliers and get hold of the end of the wire that is still on the plug and snap a pull or two it will come off for you.

Each wire has a metal cup like piece that snaps onto the rounded end of the plug. Get the rubber piece off and you will see what I mean.

Buy a new set and use just the one you need now and then when you have time do the others.

Sounds like you may have torn the wire out from the rubber "boot" that surrounds the spark plug. The spark plugs on a Vette are the same as on any othr car, a spark plug socket should easily take them out. If something is "covering" the plug, you will need to get it off the plug.

The replacement wires come in "sets" .... IMHO the best (both performance wise and price wise) are the GM Performance Parts wires ... they are red .... and are part number 12495519. If you are pulling the plugs, I'd recommend the AC Delco 41-985 Iridium plugs, they come CORRECTLY pre-gapped at 0.040 inches. These are the recommended replacement for the OEM Platinum AC Delco plugs that were gapped at 0.060

ANY parts store Pep boys/Autozone will sell you a single wire. Take one in and match it up.

My local dealer had one in stock but it was black and mine are red. I bought the car used with 37/k so I doubt if he had installed a new set of wires? Anyway, the dealer said he could order me one red wire but it was $32.00!!! I'm sorry but who is Gene and where can I get a SET for $50???

Buy the black one from the dealer to get you back on the road. Someone in the past put new wires on the car because ALL C5's came with black (very dark grey) wires from the factory. Order the GMPP and a set of plugs (I gave you the part numbers in an above post) and get them installed at your convenience.

Remember when installing the wires ... they "snap" once when they attach to the plug ... they "snap" twice when attaching to the coil.

I picked up a set of Preformance wire from the Local dealer in Lafayette, for $58 + tax , paid for them by 2 pm Tuesday and picked them up by 10 am Wednesday . GM Performance wires are part #12495519; $32 for one wire hope you get a kiss with that.....

If I had more time I would have ordered the set from GMPP as suggested. But I sucked it up and got the one from a local "stealer". The one piece (red) was $22.65 plus $2.05 tax AND $8.81 for freight!

I asked why I had to pay for freight and he said it was a special order and they made a special trip. And no kiss!!!

Order a set of performance red wired. There MUCH better quality than the standard BLACK OEM C5 wires. If you have issues with a wire again ( you will ), you will have a new better set on hand ready to go when you need them.

The GM Red wires are about as good as you going to get and the price is FANTASTIC for the quality of the wire!

Purchase wires for quality and not the horse power HYPE that some companies tout! Your NOT going to gain any more HP/TQ installing super fancy wires than what the engine came with from the factory! If you have lost HP / TQ or Idle quality, any new wire will restore that.

Thanks Bill. I appreciate the tips. I've read up on wires and you are right; the OEM red are the best. I will order a set and have them on standby. Meanwhile I will try and get over the screwing I took on one wire!!!
