Thought you would like to read the latest HOT ROD bolt on check the new hot rod magazine they say 59 hp with heads and intake sounds good to me now if I could get in touch with santa
Depending on what year your LS1 C5 is, you already have the intake. Also, I think individually a cam is better than a head if you could only choose one. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I would go for a cam too such at the T1. People are making 390RWHP with it and bolt-ons. That's 435 HP at the motor with a manual - Viper territory.-Jeremy
Heads are the key to power. Without a good set of heads, it does not really matter what else you have!
The cam is like the brain of the engine.
Now for a curve ball. The LS1 heads are be far the best flowing heads and have the best flow characreristics of any GM production head!!! They can be made MUCH better, but the cam is not all the way up to par for the heads. Changing a cam is really a great thing to do even with the stock heads.
I believe in doing these as a system though. In this respect, I would recommend heads and cam at the same time. They really ought to be matched to the profile of the head. We have around 20 custom lobes that we use and we port our heads subtly different for each application, such as automatic or 6-speed, Nitrous use, etc.
Well, to make a long story short, I would think of the engine as a system. If you upgrade one part of the system, you should upgrade the rest of the system to keep it all in harmony. :)

Cam is the best bang for buck.
The OEM cam in the LS1/LS6 heads is underated for thier stock capabilites.
Bolting on a set of heads, later, to me, is easier than a cam swap down the road. Do the cam and get it over with.
hell, I have an ntake/exhaust and am putting down ~330 at the wheels, with headers, that would be at 340-345........over 400 HP W/out head/cam. these engines rock!

Try 460 hp at the fly
And 435 is relatively close to 460. What are you confused about?

Considering the weight advantage of the C5. pretty even to me.
If I could just get a dealer to put on some worked heads that I'll supply when they re-ring me I'd rather do heads first and get the labor for free! If I can't get them to do it, it'll be a nice weekend project.....but if I already had the heads off, the cam's only a couple more hours....

If you take into count the Viper's extra weight over the C5, you are definitely in Viper territory...
A forum member (Garceeya), when he only had a cam and bolt ons (stock heads) said he was pulling vipers easily at the track......heck, I can even pull the stock 91-97 vipers with my bolt on car - its happened a few times........
If you are referring to the Vette Viper shootout, he had some heads he got from me when I was at GTP and he was running 119 MPH traps! He has not run 120.xx with stock tires! Not bad eh?
But he did have heads and cam, not cam only.
Sorry if you are referring to previous to this event. :)
With all the bolt-ons and T1 cam, my car made 374RWHP. That's approximately 440HP at the crank. But then again that's just a peak number to brag with guys :D.
But if you really want some real hp boost, throw on a 100 shot of NOS and you'll get an instant 100RWHP increase all the way from 3000RPM to 6000RPM.
The Vipers are NOT under-rated by the factory. It is a DaimlerChrysler product, which means everyone one of those engines have a huge amount of manufacturing variation. They need about a 15% tolerance on the HP rating. The Chrysler PVO group is having a tough time getting 500HP consistantly out of the 8.3l 2003 VGX engine!!!

More like 336 - 338.
2thdr had 330 RWHP as well and only gained 7 RWHP with the addition of the TPIS Long Tubes.
Still some very rockin' numbers for a bolt on LS-1! :yesnod:
