This happened to me as well. The shifter "shaft" has separated. I suspect the previous owner attempted to remove the stock ****, not knowing about the demon key. You can try to glue it back together as Bill suggested, or simply get a good used one from a forum member. If you glue it, make sure the **** is aligned properly.
Well it is loose I twisted it today to check. I suspect there are a lot of loose 6 speeds out there, the owners just don't know yet. I don't understand why there would be no pin
Tomorrow I try some friction tape for a better friction fit, if that doesn't do it then I think a bit of shoe goo is in order (if it sticks metal to rubber). There is not a lot of torsional force being used and if it does break loose one time it is not a critical breakdown.
If you want to keep the stock shifter, there's probably dozens of them laying around in member's garages. Put an ad in the for sale forum and you could probably get one that's hardly been used.
The reason that the two parts are NOT pinned together is, the rubber spacer is an ISOLATION DAMPER. It separates the lower shaft from the upper shaft to keep from transmitting un-wanted noise from the transmission and drive train into the passengers compartment.
If you lock it together with a pin,,,that ISOLATION feature is defeated. Noise you say? WHAT NOISE??? Once you no-longer have an effected isolation, you will hear gear whine from the transmission right through the shifter shaft Just ask all the people who install aftermarket shifters with solid shafts! Is not too bad and I only hear it when Im thrashing the car so, its not an issue to me.
Repair is NOT a big deal. Just glue it back together or get a used one.
Personally,,,I would find a nice used KIRBAN Shifter and throw that in. YOU WONT BE SORRY!

I have a like new C5/Z06 oem shifter/****/demon key available if that's your choice. Removed at approx. 4,000 miles from my Z16.
First off, I would not pound on it with a hammer, while its still in the car. Take it out of the car.
If your going to fix it, you should consider this mod. The hardest part of the mod is getting the two pieces apart, and that's already done for you.

Thanks Everyone I wrapped a bit of friction tape around the rod and then twisted the lever back on over top of the tape and the fit is tight, better than new maybe. .
The shifter is a little notchy but I think that is the tranny not the shifter (or not?). I am still learning how to drive and get a real feel for my C5.
Next up is checking the grounds as per senior Curlee. Bill, thanks very much for all your postings, GM and the members owe you.
Then maybe find a magnet to see if the tire pressure sensors really are missing. (New tires and a new car to me). The error message is quite annoying. William from Vancouver
