I have been having this problem the last few days. It's only a problem getting in reverse from a cold start. Once the car has warmed up, everything is fine. Any ideas???
I have been having this issue, the mechanics think it is the slave cylinder. Hold in the clutch for about 10 to 15 seconds and it should go into reverse easy. I have been doing this for a while now till I can get my car into the shop tomorrow afternoon.
i had the same problem back in 2006 with my 02 z06 turned out the flywheel bolts came loose...i knew something was wrong when i had to strongarm every gear one day i came outta the mall got in her and it wouldnt go into reverse at all the gears were EXTREMELY hard to shift (and i can bench 405) so you could imagine...anyway it started the same way you guys are explainin long story short took it to chevy dealer and they charged me 900 to tell me it was flywheel bolts
The synchro is getting old. Try putting it in first, then go into reverse. That will slow the transmission down. If you are in need of a rebuild, PM me and I'll try to assist you.
It does it warm or cold in my car. You can hear a noise that sounds like a can opener at idle with the clutch out in neutral. I tried putting it in different gears first and that usually doesnt do anything.
My problem is my car has only 14,400 miles and I bought it less than 1 month ago.
Hmmm...same here...i thought it was just me (operator error)
It can be kinda embarrassing when ya have a bunch of guys gawking to see if u know how to drive it, ya "think" your in reverse and your not
I also notice it's popping out of first sometimes...maybe i didn't push it up all the way? Maybe not. I'll have to try some of the tricks you guys mention above.
Glad i read this...like i said i thought maybe i needed more practice
mechanical error....not operator
I just found out on my car there is some transmission damage, it is in the shop right now. They are starting to tear it apart now, I will keep updating. Bad thing is that the car only has 14,000 on the clock. Mine has also popped out of first once too.
Transmission is being rebuilt, I dont know what they are replacing yet. I told them I wanted all the parts back, I will post pictures of the damaged parts.
I just got the news today the Transmission had a lot of internal damage and they are replacing it with a brand new GM transmission. The Mechanic said it was built with parts that were not up to spec and that is what fried all the bearings and some other parts in the transmission. I will find out more when I pick up the car this week.
The sumbiotch just needed clutch fluid! I've had 4 cars with a stick and never needed to replace or add clutch fluid. Granted, I might have a small leak somewhere, but I'll deal with it when I have to. For now I'll keep an extra bottle of Dot3 brake fluid in the trunk. Problem solved.....for now!
Alligning my shifter and switching to a good synthetic ATF helped mine. It's still a bit of a push compared to the other gears, I put it in third then reverse and it slides right in.
Try putting it in second, then in first, then in reverse. Thats what I do all the time and I never have a problem.
As stated above, this helps slow down the rotating part of the transmission.
When I first got my car (a little over a year ago), I had a few issues with shifting into first and reverse and popping out of first.
But I soon realized that the problem was "driver error." I just needed to think about what I was doing each time I shifted into first or reverse, making sure the car was in gear.
All is well now.
In general, the 2000 seems rather difficult to shift (somewhat heavy and stiff), as compared to an 07 or 08.
