Finished up the install of the new clutch (Centerforce 12" Dual Friction) and DTE 3.90 Stage II diff this weekend. Took the car out into the parking lot for a burnout test. Now the clutch is slipping real bad and the diff is making some funny noises. Do think DTE and Centerforce will warranty the parts??
Seriouosly, I am going to love this diff! Still in the "take it easy" break in period, but even at light throttle applications I can tell the car just wants to explode with acceleration. It seems to really match up to the big cam in the car. And the Centerforce performs exactly like I knew it would. Light pedal effort, smooth and easy engagement, no shudder. Just perfect. Cant freaking WAIT to get through the break-in period so I can it the loud switch and scare people. Oh ya, threw on some B&B Bullets while the car was apart. Now with American Racing Headers and catless x-pipe, the car really does scare people!!!
The Z is now what I was hoping it would be. Anybody on the fence about a gear swap, get off off the damn fence and wake your car up with a gear swap!
Here's a little vid of the new exhaust for you listening pleasure...

I guess that sorta defeats the purpose of the break-in period...hmmm.

Let me understand you correctly.. You installed the differential and clutch into the car, then took it right out and did a big burnout right afterwards *BEFORE* the break-in schedule was completed???
Sure, *cough..cough* no problem.... yeahhhhhhhh, rightttttttttt BTW, you don't need no stinking oil in it either...she likes to run dry!
That first paragraph scared me for a minute! Whewwww!

Hopefully the OP is kidding. The break-in period killed me when I did mine but I was faithful to a "T" and now the rear is quiet and runs great. I also did the clutch at the same time so I broke them both in together.
You had me going there! You will love the 3:90's. I got DTE's 4:10's and just driving normally is much more fun then the stock 3:42's were. When I do a WOT she really comes to life now. Everyone that had gotten them told me it should have been the first mod and they were correct.
About how much did the whole thing cost? Did it include the hardened output shaft? Did you have it installed or do it yourself? How much in labor?
Sorry about all the questions, but I'm really wanting to do exactly this, and have no clue about what kind of dollars we're talking about, and am unsure whether to try and tackle this project on my own or have it done.

Ask away, I will help with what I can. The DTE Stage II Diff was $1699, plus shipping, plus core charge, or you can have them rebuild your diff. I did the work myself. If you only remove the diff, it is a pretty simple, straightforward operation. DTE can provide a turnkey installation for I think $2099 if you choose not to do it yourself. Check dtepowertrain.com for more info or give them a call. They were EXTREMELY helpful when I was on the fence about doing this. I actually talked to them a couple of times before I pulled the trigger.
The Stage 2 HD DTE Differential model Steve chose is $1699. The fully refundable core charge is $700 and once we receive your original, undamaged, rebuildable differential core back to us within 15 business days after you receive your new differential, we refund your credit card 100% in full for the previous core charge. Lastly- fully insured, FedEx regular ground shipping to anywhere within the Continental USA is approx. $60.
There hasn't been any IRS driveline combination or configuration we haven't built for at some point or another, so if you have any questions, please call- as we've most likely "been there, done that" many times before. Additionally, we've pioneered a lot of these driveline product designs that are just now being imitated by others, but never duplicated.
In fact, one of our tricked-out differentials was in a high powered C5 Corvette last Fall that set the Bonneville Land Speed Record for that class at 238+ MPH! (the post from that is around this board somewhere..) and one of our HP differentials were chosen by Snap-On Tools to be installed in their ultra-trick, high-powered 1957 Chevy Nomad called the Glo-mad that was debuted at SEMA last year.
ive never broken in any diff ive ever built and i've got thousands of passes on them all in the 1.5-1.6 60' range w/o ever a problem I Just do a few figure 8s to seat the clutches and off i go.
Sounds great 512 ! I too have the DTE stage 2 3.90 although mine is in an A4. I had the car tuned at FLP last summer & it sure seems strong ! I don't drive the car much (6-800 miles a year) but sure do enjoy the car more after the gears & converter.
