currently have heads and cam with 3.15. want to add a torque converter. i was looking at TCI 3000 stall. Would you reccommend this? I have seen it for $469.00
Here is my questions
do I need to change the gears as well? would i notice much going to 3.42, i know the labor is the same. Is it cheaper to buy a z06 rear or just let the shop purchase and install.
i had a tci once worked great, but failed 2 years later, as have on many other peoples cars, i spent more for a Vig and so far so good, had it on for a year, time will tell. but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
The one who tunes after the converter install determines success or failure.
Don't go cheap on such a crucial matter.
Don't go too low 3500 or 3600 stall is good - if you go lower and you add other power makers you will have to redo the converter because it becomes the "narrow" part of the straw that goes from air intake to the exhaust system.
I have 3.42 gears but I came from 2.73's - I would go to the 3.73's - I will explain later.
The high stall converter of today drives daily like a small converter.
I have heads/cam-headers-3.42 gears- Yank 3600 high stall converter in 2000 coupe daily driver -wife drives it too!!No sense of the high stall conv.until I ask it to come to life and it does!!
When I added the Yank SS3600 my 1/4 mile dropped by 1/2 seconds!!
Going from the 3.15 to 3.42 will not show you enouogh change. The car I rode in to "test" the Yank SS3600 had the 3.73's and they were boss!!
The same daily driveability as mine as well as really good mileage on the highway. This should be your choice.
Take a look at the post by Mike Mercury. He has a nice write up on an alternative torqe converter from GM. It will surprise you when you read it. I have 3.42 now and I didn't change converters at all and I have had no problems at all so far. Save your self some money and read the post.
Avoid TCI overall! I got a racing trans from them a couple years ago for my firebird and the rear seal failed and burned up the trans two months later! And I barely drove the car (broken in 650mi) and never ran it hard. For my C5 I recently got a yank3600 (3.42's and h/c) top of the line. Is $200 more worth it? Hell yeah! A 3600 stall is recommended even with 3.15 gears, you wont regret it.
[QUOTE=2001blkvet;1564614476]so im guessing tci is out of the question. where can i find a yank[/QUOT
Look up Yank on the web. Talk to Dave and he will do well by you. Tell him to have a look at this thread so he can see the recommendations he's been given.
I went from 3:15s to 3:42s and a 3500 Yank. Let the naysayers have their opinions. A 2800 stall will not be as beneficial as a higher stall for high horse power engines. Just get a new diff($1200) and sell your 3:15s($400-500). I would not recommend going to a 3:73 if you do a fair amount of highway driving.

I agree that a higher stall would be better. I'm, running a Yank SS3200, with 3.15 gears, and love it. You cannot tell the difference between it and a stock stall, until you drop the hammer. It's a very "tight" stall and a beautiful driver. I'm planning on having 3.73 gears installed this Spring, and think they will be a real hoot to drive with, in conjunction with my other mods (see Profile). I do have a couple of long-winded trips planned, and will have to tolerate the additional noise generated by the increased rpms. My car is loud now, and, I realize, will be even louder at upper freeway speeds where my GHLs will be exiting the non-resonance band of their tuning. Hopefully, I will not have to change catbacks as I do really love my GHLs. Good luck with your mods!

I don't think that this is the case -will ask a guy with heads/cam/headers/Yank SS3600/like mine but he has 3.73's instead of 3.42's that I have. I get 29 mpg on highway - 70 mph speed is at 2100rpms. I will check what his mpg is on highway but I think it is around 28 mpg.
If you don't go to the 3.73's stay with the 3.15's and go with the Yank SS3600
