Wife and I were out cruzin' last night and we found a long stretch of road with no cars or houses. She always asks me what it is like to run the 1/4, so I stopped and preformed the normal staging stuff. Leaned on the convertor a little and stomped the gas. Thump, Thump, Thump, I backed out and it took off. Stopped and tried again, same problem. I tried 4 times with the same results. The last time, I stayed in it and just before it shifted (A4), something flashed on my HUD and went away. I had never seen this before either. The car is very slow, I can't even spin the tires unless the roads are wet. It is so slow I am somewhat embarrassed to post my ET. The car is a bone stock 99 coupe. Any ideas why it stumbled and what the message was on the HUD?
We tried to trade it in for a '02 Z06 last weekend and walked away when we found the value of our loaded 99 with 9K mile started with a 2, $2x,000.00.
From my experience I'd say you're probably experiencing some axle hop. Since our cars have independent rear suspension and toe-in set at the factory it's not uncommon to hear about this condition. I noticed you said the car can't lose traction, though.
Did it feel like the back of the car was hopping around?
Maybe it could've been TC/AH kicking in...
The message would've been "Service ABS...Service Traction Control etc.." if what I'm thinking happened.
The motor stumbled, almost like a carb backfire, flooded or something. I never would expect this to happen with a fuel infected car.
Man do I wish I had traction problems !
No, I left TC/AH on. I have never been able to spin the tires, so I just left it on. It did not feel like the tires were spinning. The rear did not move around at all. I got the message on the HUD going from 1st to 2nd. It was gone be for I could read it. It was at the top of the display.
Take AH/TC off and it will spin the tires and impress your wife. Then she'll feed you grapes and rub your feet for the rest of the evening. I'm willing to bet money that's the problem.

I just checked the manual and it must have been "Shift" that flashed on the HUD. I thought that was only for the M6 cars.
If it was TC/AH kicking in, I will be one happy dude. I would love to leave a pair of wide black strips with a little smoke adding in for effect.
I think this calls for another test with TC turned off.
Thanks for all the help!
When I drag race, TC/AH is turned off and I can barely clean the tires off. Also, this has never happened in warmer weather. Is it possible the cool air last night made a difference? Most of the time I drive in Atl. beep and creep traffic and I just started running the car hard. Can the car learn to run better? Hope that make sense.
Ya I would turn off the traction control and try it again, also the sputter, sounds like your rev limiter kicking in what was your rpm's like. :yesnod: where you manually shifting your auto
Is it possible the cool air last night made a difference? Absolutely, you'll have more power and less grip in those conditions. The pavement might have been real slick also?
Can the car learn to run better? Yes, the PCM takes driving style into consideration for tuning. The harder you drive the car the better it will run because the PCM will be setup for maximum performance in regards to timing advance.

Someone told me I ruined the car by not driving it as it was intended.
Cruzmisl,,,I like your style,,, the wife said if I do a big smokey burning tonight she will feed me grapes and rub my feet

That's a little harsh! If you're really concerned about the PCM's calibrations you can easily reset it by disconnecting the negative end of the battery and let it sit for 15 or more minutes. Then put the car through some hard runs. This is how I like to do it :D
I was wondering if by a long shot you may have the same problem I had on my 99 Vert(Torch Red/Tan int and top)I used a hypertech for my shift points and the settings were off and the engine would over-rev and hit close to 7,000 RPM. yet the tranny was set to shift at 7200 RPM (hypothetical #'s)
So basically at W.O.T the enginewould hit the rev limiter before the tranny was ready to shift when ran in full auto mode,of course I could overide this situation by manually shifting, but once I reprogramed a fast crisp shift at 200 RPM below red line all was fine again and it only occurred between the 1-2 shift all else was programed on the money. But of course if your not `using a
Hypertech or similar device that controls shift patterns its a moot point.
I hope this ,is of some help. Yours Truly David S.
