Wow, this is a little scary. I just bought a 2002 Z06 that I plan on using for a daily driver for hopefully many years to come. Should I consider changing the valve springs now before I end up with a similar mess?

its cheep insurance if you plan on beating on it any. i know of people that replace them at least once a year because they beat on them so hard.

I have an 02 ZO6 and its driven hard daily. It's got 50K miles and I'm still on the same set of springs. I know people have broken springs but, I drive mine as a daily driver and its fine. It sees red line daily.
I have a major MODs ready to install so, my new springs will come in the form of Patriot Performance heads, gold springs and Ti retainers.

I would STRONGLY suggest replacing your rockers while you're in there. Either upgrade to the Yella Terra's that everyone is raving about, or just a new set of GM performance parts ones (cheaper)....One of my rockers failed at the same time the spring did and dumped all the roller bearings into the motor....needless to say it is good preventative maintenance!
good thing i planed on putting new valve springs in my car before the autocross in 2 weeks.
That's exactly what I was expecting to see when we pulled the head off. It would seem that when my valvespring broke, the two halves stayed stacked together, and prevented the valve from dropping.

With as many stories like mine as I'm coming across, I would say definately replace them if you're out of warranty - cheap insurance vs rebuilding a motor. The guy at LG said they have a pile of broken stock yellow valve springs. If you're even planning on doing a cam upgrade, that's the perfect time to do it.
