Default Thread Tape for transmission lines?

I swapped my transmission recently after it went south. Car in a '97 A4. I'm having some fluid leak out of the general area of the transmission lines. I haven't dropped the exhaust yet to see if I can get to them.

Question I have:

Should I have used something to seal those threads?

I suppose I could have just left one loose.

The metal lines seal to the fittings using a compression fitting and flares on the tubing. The threads on the fittings should be clean and burr free so that the flare nut can screw down as far as necessary to apply force on the back of the flare. The flares and mating surfaces in the female fitting need to be clean and damage free to seal properly. Make sure that the compression fittings are tight.

If you removed the female fitting from the transmission,, the threads on that fitting are a tapered pipe type thread and would benefit from some type of sealing compound or tape.

Tape or sealing compound should NOT be used in the threads of the compression fittings.

Thank You!

I just jacked it up and I guess I'll remove the exhaust to see if I can reach those fittings.

How difficult was it to reach those fittings on the A4?? I've got a 16 row Earls cooler sitting around that would fit perfect in the area of the differential but I keep looking at getting to those fittings on the tranny and my hands just aren't small enough to reach in and do the work. Would love to make this a tranny cooler hung at the rear instead of up front.
