Because 1.8 makes the lift higher. Most buy larger cams with high lift already and with to much lift, They would have pistons colliding with valves. Most would rather just buy a large cam. 1.8 RR would work fine and make your stock cam feel a bit larger than it is though. If your buying roller rockers and do not plan on going with a larger cam i would go 1.8 as well.
I just did YT 1.8 a month ago along with hardened push rods.
I can feel the difference, especially over 5K rpms. The power used to drop off at 5600 or so. Now I sometimes accidentally hit the rev limiter (6300) because it pulls all the way.
On a side note, I gained 2 mpg in mixed driving. Normally I was getting about 22, now its 24.
Mods: Honker CAI, LG streets coated, tuned.
The more mods you already have, the better the 1.8s will work.
If you plan never to do a cam, this is a good alternative. However, in all honesty, I did cam then heads and felt when done the heads were actually a bigger job. The key will be compression and head selection. There are several documented tests with AFR 205 heads that have gained 40 HP or more.
I just have the 243 castings and due to the little guy on the way I'm going to finish the head swap only and enjoy the ride. Sounds like the 1.8s will be the way to go?
Sounds like a plan, just make sure you check wipe then measure for pushrod length. Also, are they Z06 heads? If not, I am not sure if the valve springs will be up to task with 1.8's due to faster accelerations and more rocker inertia.
I used a comp 915. They worked pretty well on mine. The 918's had a lot of problems with breaking if reved before warm. The 915's suited my application well and i know a lot of people flamed me for the choice but my engine builder tested them and said they were perfect for my build. My cam was a GM hot cam. Cam orginally with ls6 springs(blue) But i wanted to make sure my motor had just a slight bit better than good.
