I have a 2003 Anniversary Coupe. For the past year, the HUD is slowly getting dimmer. When it was new, I could easily see it, even in broad daylight. It is now to the point where it is barely visible in daylight, even when the slide dimmer is all the way up to where the display should be the brightest. Anyone else ever have such a problem? Any ideas?
I have been noticing the same thing on my '01 coupe. I thought it was dirty glass but that is not the case.Still looks great at night. Maybe it is just the angle of the sun this time of year.
Yes, I have cleaned the cover on the dash and the windshield ... helps some, but it is still very dim, almost not visible in the Texas sunlight. I have not been inside the dash to clean anything ... but I did ask the dealer to do that and I guess he did.
you know what I would do if I were you. go over to a buddy's house with HUD like yours, lean over the vehicle and stare down through the windshield and make a mental note of the light intensity.... then do so on your car. if your car has a lower intensity, then the problem is one of two things, your projector, or your DIC and associated dimmer. You can always perform the old switcheroo. assumign you have a buddy who will let you do that.... could be an expensive fix.... personally, i would just look down at the gauge on the really bright sunny days.
I have had this problem and I know what the cause is. There is a light sensor inside the center top of the HUD itself that controls the brightness. Its failing. I just bought a new HUD and put it in and no more problem. They don't sell the sensor itself seperately. Be prepared to have the same thing happen to the DIC controller on the dash as the light sensor there too will start to fail. Yes, I had to replace it as well which controls the DIC Display and HVAC display brightness during the day.

thats so interesting, where are these sensors located? consider yourself lucky to see both fail in your car.... lol you should buy a lottery ticket.
The HUD sensor is in the top, center of the hud itself, inside it. The DIC light sensor is in the top of it just above the fuel button.
The reason why I've seen both fail is either bad luck or the extreme miles on my '99. Hope its just the miles
Those light sensors are a common electrical component. I bet an electronics shop could match one up for you and you could just replace the single component. There like 75 cents. If someone has a defective HUD, I would be willing to try to fix it.
