Ok, have you guys ever had one of your sensors go and show the XXX and then come back to reading tire pressure? if so, is this a precursor to something more???
If had that issue for a few months. Happens when i drive hours at a time from city to city. It always works again the next ignition cycle. Doesn't bother me to much, but id like to know whats going on. Its always the same 1.
Its a precursor to the battery failing. The battery life is about 7 years or so. When the RFA fails to receive a signal for 8 secs (IIRC) it sets a DTC and gives XXX.
The problem is that if one sensor is about to fail they'll probably all go in the near future. You may wish to get the whole set changed while you're at it.
Don't forget the early C5s had a different (& more expensive) sensor that works at a different frequency. Your 98 has the old type sensors. Make sure you get the right ones for your car.
I have one that does the same thing. You will find out that it does it more in hotter weather than when cold.
Battery is going, meaning that soon they will all go south.

I had the same problem after storing my 98 C5 all winter. I was just going to let it go until I put new tires on the car. I sure the batteries are low because of the age. After driving the car a couple of times the sensor started working fine. I’m still planing on swapping them out in the near future.
My right rear is failing, on occasion. It seems to be related to the tire pressure, which increases as the temperature rises. When the pressure gets to about 35 psi, the sensor fails. I plan to have it checked out.

It is Much easier to train them before mounting in the wheels.
I did my new sensors that way in less than two minutes, and right from the driver's seat!
