Default More on ABS/ Traction Control Problems

This is my second post on this problem with my 98 vette, and thanks to some informative replies and links I am "enlightened"! I see many posts about this problem on newer C5s referring to a pump up under the front of the engine, (or am I mistaken ?) I believe my EBCM is mounted below my battery...I have yet to remove it from the car. There is a great link that some one was generous enough to share that lists all the error codes and how to access them (THANKS!!!!) I am again assuming all C5 codes are the same...I cleared all codes, I think some were there from 2002 when I had faulty seat rails replaced, I then drove the car. I got a C1217 H code immediately and then a C1255 code after I drove the car to the store and back...I am going to pull the battery and the module tomorrow to do some exploring..(inquiring minds want to know!)..any insight as to how I might proceed is always appreciated. I will post any info I might find.. Thanks again L.G.

The 1997 Model Year and the earlier part of the 1998 Model Year cars have the EBCM located in the rear of the car .... down by the axle. After that the EBCM is located in the engine compartment ... look on the drivers side .... just forward of the engine .... kinda low .... look for what appears to be an aluminum box with six brake lines attached to it. If you don't see it in the engine compartment look under the rear of the car for it.

The computers located under the battery are the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the TAC for the throttle.

C1217 - Pump Motor Relay Contact Circ Open
C1255 - EBTCM Internal Malf

Post where your EBCM is located and I'll tell you where the grounds are located ..... you REALLY want to hope cleaning the grounds is going to fix the problem ... the parts to fix these problems on your car are HIDEOUSLY expensive .... at GM list price you are looking at over $3,000 for the EBCM and BPMV ....

Before my earlier post I opened my hood and the EBCM described by other forum members was nowhere to be found. (that's why I assumed it was under the battery. However you were right on with its location, behind the differential. After closer inspection I noticed that the 16-18 gage red wire (V+) had a swollen section just outside of the clamp on connector. The suspect section of wire was cut out and a new piece was installed and covered with heat shrink.....PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! no more error codes, no more yellow warning lights....Thanks for your help. Now if I can figure out the faulty "park" circuit on my wind shield wipers...thanks again...Larry G.

Gus,

The wiper "problem" is most likely a fault in the control board in the wiper motor. The Service Manual only says "The depressed park positioning is accomplished by an external drive mechanism on the wiper motor assembly"

Unfortunately removing the motor requires two "special" tools ......

J 39232 Wiper Linkage Separator
J 39529 Wiper Linkage Installer

You need them to remove the mechanical "arm" from the old motor and pop on the new motor. You could try and pop the arms off using something like a BIG flat bladed screw driver .... but if you mess up it will be VERY expensive parts to fix it .....

If you want to still do this yourself .... here's what I'd do .... post back and I'll give you the instructions to remove the arms and motor (and part number for new motor) and you could then inspect the old motor to see if there is an obvious "fix" that you can perform. If you then need to replace the motor .... take the old motor to a dealer with the arms still attached. Also take the new motor. I'll bet for $40.00 someone will quickly perform this service for you .... popping off the old motor and popping on the new one ... it should litterally be a 2 minute job with the right tools.

Default Wipers

Blackie,

Thanks for taking the time to look into my wiper problem. The w.w.motor works fine, wiper delay, single wipe cycle, wash etc. it just won't "park". I thought that there might be some circuitry that parks wipers, I was hoping it might be external to the motor (maybe a relay or pc board) located somewhere in the car, not under the cowel. I am fairly proficient with electronics and have access to a machine shop, to fab any specialty tools...I refuse to deal with my local GM dealer (in 2004 I was escorted to the street with my 98 after numerous "steering column lock" problems...they tried to charge me 1400.00 for the BCM under the passenger floorboard after their mechanic shorted the cable to the lock pin motor... it was fixed in an hours time with a 20 cent diode..I live in a rather caustic atmosphere in daytona, a block from the Atlantic ocean although the car is garaged I expect I'll find a corroded connection like my EBCM. Hopefully, it can be fixed with some time and "yankee ingenuity". I may not get to this project right a way but I'll let you know what I find....Thanks again.....L.G.
