It sounds like the gear could be stripped.

Its a nylon gear and the teeth can be damaged. It oftem shows itself as a machine gun type noise when its closing.

You can manually move the gears. Look on the back of the headlight and you'll see a round rubber cover. take it off and you can manually raise or lower the lights. Turn it a little way and see if the light behaves normally or moves better. if so, its the gear thats the problem.

Theres a great thread which shows you how to fix it but there could be other things that would cause the same problem

Post back up and let us know how you go.

Doesn't sound like the gear.

There is a nylon stop the the motor arm hits at full open and full close positions. The stop looks like a white chicklet gum. When the close stop breaks off the motor arm continues past the full close position and allows the headlight to move up again. This sounds like your problem.

You can temporarily fix the problem by borrowing one of the stops at the back end of the headlight door (along the trailing edge) and replace the broken/missing stop. Look at the other headlight and you should be able to see where it is. Then go to the dealer to get a replacement. There's a TSB on this issue that I'll try to find.

Here's the TSB:

Number: 00-08-42-002
Subject: Left Headlamp Door Does Not Stay Closed (Shim Headlamp Door Motor/Actuator and Replace Insulators)
Model Year: 2000 Chevrolet Corvette
Condition: Some customers may comment that the left front headlamp door does not remain closed after the headlamps are turned off. Others may comment
that the left headlamp door closes when the headlamps are turned off, but then reopens. In either case, the right headlamp door operates properly.

Correction

Important

The following information applies to the left front headlamp door motor/actuator only. It does not apply to and should not be performed on the right front headlamp door motor/actuator.

Install one washer (2) between the left headlamp door motor/actuator (1) and the mounting bracket (3) at each of the three attaching bolt locations. Also replace the insulator (4) on each of the two mounting bracket travel stop tabs (5) as shown. For information on headlamp motor/actuator removal, see the Headlamp Motor/Actuator Replacement procedure in the Lighting sub-section of Body & Accessories in the appropriate Service Manual.
Parts Information
Part Number Description Qty Per Vehicle
11505463 Washer 3
16524060 Insulator 2

Also, here's another thread with a picture. Do a search and you'll find a lot of info on this.

That could also be the problem. The door normally opens all the way when its the insulator though.

I'd put my money on a stripped gear. By moving it manually you've probably moved it to a position where the damaged gear no longer makes contact with the other part of the gearing.

If its new is it under warranty?

If not run down to headlight gears in this thread and you'll see how to fit a brass gear replacement

I hear the machine gun noise for about five seconds after my headlights close. Is it a damaged nylon gear also. I just bought this 98 and discovered the issue last night. Any help would be appreciated.
