Next step is to remove the "key" that prevents the **** from rotating on the shaft.

The "key" can be a b!tch to get out ... some people find that locking a ViseGrip on it and pulling straight up works ..... I believe those guys also wrestle in the WWF. Another choice is to take a screwdriveer and try and pry it out .... the handle of the screwdriver will be close to the radio and the blade will be pointing to the back of the car .... try to not lever against the leather shift ****. For more ideas search the forum for the phrase "demon key" as that is what most people refer to it as once they have tried to take it out. Be patient ... a couple of days and you'll have it out ....

Once the key is out ... unscrew the **** from the shaft.

I used a pair of Vise Grips and tapped up on the Vise Grips with a hammer while pulling upwards. Just watch out for the rear view mirror.

Do you have Microsoft Word? If so, PM me your e-mail and I will send you a word document with the procedure, including pictures. The website I got it from no longer exists.

I used the hammer 'tap' on the vise grip as shown by 2000-C5 over the screwdriver pry as shown in the attached link. The demon key came out very easily.

clamp the needle nose vicegrips on the demon key.
jaws front to back of car.
Pretend you are a dentist pulling out a took and wiggle the vice grips front to back pulling up
(like pulling a tooth out of the lower jaw) simultaneoulsy sharply rap the side of the vice grips with the hammer.
hit on the passenger side of the vide grips...
by the 3rd tap... the key should be out.

Default Removing OEM Shift ****

I followed the same process as 2000C-5 and it came out with only 1-2 taps and they were only "light taps". I dreaded this for days and it turned out to be nothing. Best of luck!
