i used to have the same one...had the same problems. I wound up blowing up my trans, and shiched the shifter to a breathless performance...... wow what a difference the car in enjoyable to drive again...
I just bought a 2000 6 spd. The previous owner said the shifter is a B&M Ripper.
I've had this shifter in two c5s previously, but this one is so hard to shift that I'm having to use both arms to get it into 6th!
Is there a spring (or something) that can be changed to soften the shifting?
^^Posting outside of CFOT for a change.
One thing you can do to make the shifting easier is to do something called the anti-venom mod. What it basically involves is putting one or two washers where the detente bolt connects the shifting rod to the tranny. This bolt has a spring loaded ball at the end. It is pretty strong. The washer lessen the spring tension.
IIRC, the shifter rod is on the passenger side of the tranny, in the middle of the tranny toward the top. Put some silicone around the washers to prevent any small leaks.
To answer your question, yes, most aftermarket shifters have side-to-side springs in a variety of cross-section diameters. Most people choose the softest spring (as I did), but I'd say your shifter has the stouter versions.
The Anti-Venom mod is very worthwhile (I used two .050-inch thick copper washers), but it makes getting into and out of gear much easier; it does nothing for side-to-side effort.
By the way, welcome back to the C5 side. You are one of the C5 forum's old-timers!

thanks for all the replies!
i'm leaning toward a c6 shifter. either regular or z06. i want something much easier than these after market shifters, as i intend to teach my 16 year daughter on this car.
she's doing great learning on my c6...but, uh...that's my c6.
so would the anti venom mod accomplish this purpose? of making it much easier and more "normal" to shift?
and yeah, Dave...i'm an old timer alright. i've never actually left...i still have my 97coupe.
i'll post pix of this new ride once i download them. just drove it home from Florida on Monday.

^^If you put in a C6 Z06 shifter and do the anti-venom mod, the shifting will be very easy. It will greatly reduce the force required to shift.
I have a C5 FRC. Started out with the stock shifter. It sucked.
Next went to the Hurst short shifter and anti-venom mod. Much better but still a bit stiff.
Switched to the C6 Z06 shifter and shifting is great. That is the way it should come from the factory!!

Wow, you are brave! I let my 17-year son drive my C5 once, but most of the time, he has to drive a 97 Civic CX with a whole bunch of mods (Magnaflow exhaust is one of them, so it sounds great!). My daughter will be driving soon, but she'll start out on my 89 Mazda MX6 GT Turbo.

For most 16 year old girls? I'd say the C6 shifter is your best bet. But the most common complaint about the C6 I've seen over and over in many car magazines is the "rubbery shifter". Porsche's shifter is more like an anti-venon Hurst or BPP (very direct with no rubber isolation feel). I tend to agree - rubbery and easy may be nice to some people, but I prefer the direct, bolt-action feel.

Need to work on your triceps a little more, Liz. :p
I've got the B&M ripper in my FRC and although it is a little notchy it's easy to shift. I will admit it can be a little hard getting into reverse sometimes though. I think there are also positive adjustment stops and that might need adjusting on yours (and for reverse on mine). Other than that you could try using the softer springs or going to the C6 shifter.
Good luck!

the c6 z06 shifter AND the anti-venom mod??? why?
i drive a c6 z06 at autocross (with the original shifter) and have no issue with it...of course it's the shifter AND the z.

she's had lessons already....but only on my c6. and only in our hood...not on the "real" roads.

^^I don't know about the C6 Z06, but the C5s have that damn detente bolt that I mentioned in an earlier post. That is one of the reasons the shifter takes so much effort. As I said it is spring loaded and it is fairly stiff. By changing both the shifter and doing the anti-venom mod the shifting will be greatly improved.
I plan to do both when I (with my brother's assistance) shove my new drive line (rpm level 5 tranny + a whole lot of extras) back into my FRC.
Had done both with my stock tranny and it worked great.
