Default Ideal Cam for AFR heads

Hello,

I am planning for a heads/cam upgrade for my 02 Z06. I would like to start with the cam only at first. What is the best matched cam for the AFR 205 heads? I was considering an LG G5 (224/230, .581/.572 114 LSA) or an LG G5X1 (228/232 .588/.574 112 or 114 LSA).

The car currently has LG Street headers and a Halltech air intake. The car is only driven a couple times per week and doesn't see the track or strip.

Thanks for the help.

Close enough....LOL

224/228 with .581/.588 respectfully (114 LSA was also correct).

Its our AFR P/N 6016 and works great on the street....perfect "all around" type camshaft that drives like stock (no lugging or protesting at low RPM), has a slight lope at an idle, and makes power everywhere from the crack of the throttle to 6600 or so....even higher with an optimized package (ported FAST 90/90....headers....etc.)

Hope this helps...

Tony

Thanks very much. That makes my cam choice so much easier. One can drive themself crazy with all the cam choices.

Ok, so just a rough estimate...if I am at 370rwhp/365rwtq now what kind of increase should I expect from the AFR heads and specified cam? How much more if I add the ported FAST intake?

Thanks for the insight.

Probably 440 rwhp with the heads and cam and another 15 to 20 rwhp with the Fast.

I dont know what route you want to go with but im picking this combo up as soon as I get my tranny built.

I have a set of AFR's tweaked by Tony, one of his ported FAST intakes (on the car) and that cam on my workbench right now. Heads are gorgeous.

Sounds like a great combo. 100hp over stock. I now have a plan.

Thanks.

What is the recommendation as far as milling the heads go? It looks like most have additional milling?

With the AFR cam, 62cc puts you near the limit of PTV with a Cometic 0.040.

I am running a 228/232 .588 .590 on a 113lsa. My car is an 01 6speed coupe.. I left the heads(afr205) alone and did not mill them. With this cam (and headers) I made 403RWHP and 401RWTRQ. I am running the stock Ls6 intake and Halltech Stinger.

Will an LS6 make much difference? I would think 400rwhp with the cam alone and then another 30-40 with the AFR heads? Valid expectation or wishful thinking?

Yea, you should hit 400RWHP with cam and headers alone, you've got a Z06 , so your stock base HP at the wheels is about 350... remember, my car is a coupe, so my base HP is about 300-310 to the wheels..so I picked up about 100RWHP with heads/cam/headers and tune.

If you add heads to the cam you are talking about, I would think you would get in the ballpark of 430-440RWHP depending on how the car is tuned, and around the same type of cam I have, or even a bit smaller.

That's what I have. Ported FAST combo in the works. Makes good power, but still wish I would have gone a little bigger...

I thought all 01 and newer vettes had the LS6 intake by default. No?

If you go with a bigger cam won't the additional power move up the curve?

What is the largest cam you can pair with these heads without compromising a good increase in power across the entire rpm band?

I would like a little lump in the cam but don't want to give up torque down low since this is mainly a street car. It sounds like the 224/228 on 114 strikes a good balance. Would a 112 LSA of the same cam provide a little better midrange power? Any compromises with a 112? I don't mind some shake at idle and am willing to put the time in for a proper tune.

Thanks.

I just sold my 02 Z06 with Tony Mamo Recipe. The 224/228 on a 114 never quits. I think Tony was shifting his around 7100 RPM. On a 114, the power just carries.

If you follow the recipe to the letter with say a .030 milled head and a
.040 cometic gasket, 224/228 puts PTVC at around .080 and .100. Tony still had slight kiss issues when he tore his 346 apart with the 224/228 cam.

The power done low and up top with this setup was a lot of fun. With the research that Tony put into this setup, it is hard to do much better.

I am missing my car already.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any dyno numbers with that setup? i am trying to determine if I want to go heads/cam or just save for a supercharger.

Thanks.
